Victor Feldman – The Venezuela Joropo
via youtube, ***** in einem Downbeat-Heft von 1968 machten mich neugierig… der Leader spielt hier Marimbaphon, Vibraphon und elektrisches Cembalo, daneben gibt es eine grössere Band mit unter anderem Emil Richards (mehr Vibraphon und Marimbaphon), Bill Perkins (nur Flöte), Dennis Budimir (g), andere aus der wrecking crew (Max Bennett, Larry Bunker, Milt Holland), Harfe, aber keinem Gesang und keinen weiteren Bläsern… das Album positioniert sich irgendwo zwischen der Indio-Gruppe aus der Fussgängerzone (gibt es die noch?) und Getz/Gilberto… hat dabei aber eine subtile hypnotische Qualität, die beiden irgendwie fehlt… die man in der Zeit vielleicht eher bei Gabor Szabo oder Chico Hamilton findet… ich glaub ich kann die Begeisterung des Downbeat Reviewers tatsächlich ein bisschen nachvollziehen (mehr noch nicht)

The music, much of which is derived from the folk music of Venezuela particularly in the use of that music’s rhythmic unit of six beats), bears a great similarity to bossa nova, though is generally much subtler, more insinuating, and less overt
than even that supple samba form. The music in this album is graceful, elegant, and at all times romantic—uncloyingly, trippingly lyrical. [..]Lovingly conceived, beautifully performed, and handsomely recorded, this album is simply a joy throughout. If, like me, you respond to the insinuating charm and lyricism of bossa nova, this album is for you. Unreservedly recommended.
