I was fortunate to see Chet Baker „live“ in Paris when I was twenty-five in year 1980. We had just completed a tour of Italy with Bill Dixon. Promised work in Paris for the sextet fell through, but Bill agreed to travel to the city for a series of dates using Steve Lacy’s rhythm section of the time. We all followed Bill to Paris.

Once settled in Paris, we all went with Bill to listen to Chet Baker. He was superb, and spun long melodic lines with an iconic tone and never leaving the mid-register of the horn. Later at Bill’s first gig, he would play a long improvisation extrapolated from My Funny Valentine, dedicated to Chet. I will never forget that evening.
