Abdullah Ibrahim – Solotude: My Journey, My Vision
(LP/CD/DL, 16. November 2021)

South African piano maestro Abdullah Ibrahim has announced a new solo piano album, Solotude, due for release on November 26.

The album consists of a performance on Ibrahim’s birthday last year in October at Hirzinger Hall, in South East Germany. Whilst Ibrahim traditionally performs an annual birthday concert at Hirzinger, due to lockdown restrictions at the time of recording, this was replaced with the opportunity to record a solo piano performance. The recording crew was sparse, the audience non-existent, yet Ibrahim’s communion with the piano remained warm and timeless.

The music spans timeless classics including Blues for a Hip King and The Wedding, seldom recorded pieces such as Tokai, as well as new themes Once Upon A Midnight, In The Evening, and Signal On A Hill. The enduring purity and honesty of Ibrahim’s touch and the emotive simplicity of his writing demonstrates that even in the dark, hope shines through. At 86, and even through a pandemic, the ever-active and imaginative Ibrahim shows no signs of stopping.

Solotude is out digitally and on LP/CD on Gearbox direct platforms on November 26, and on LP/CD in record shops on January 14.

Hirzinger Hall, in Riedering, South East Germany, is famous for its incredible acoustics, and Ibrahim’s solitary performance lends itself perfectly to the space, The recording crew was sparse, the audience non-existent, yet Ibrahim’s communion with the piano remains warm and timeless.
