Well, first, I am very happy I was picked to do it, you know. Right off the bat, I wondered why I got the call to do this thing. Why didn’t Russ Freeman get it? Why didn’t Kenny Barron do it? The management that produced the movie did tell me, eventually, they were willing to get anyone Chet Baker wanted. A very important thing for that movie, I come to find out, was the choice of a piano player. „What piano player do you want, Chet? Do you want this guy, that guy?“ I don’t want to name names, but they were ready to pay to get anybody. I mean, they were going to go all out. If Chet even wanted Hank Jones, I mean, they would have paid to get him, I think. I mean, if Hank would have wanted to do it, you know, they would have got him. They would have paid for him.
