The music is stellar, beyond stars. The remastering, etc., as good as it can get. The 2 stars is for the presentation of the music in this set. Instead of simply being a collected set of the extant CD reissues, some genius decided to rearrange things a little; mainly by moving all the alternate takes to follow the originally issued one, instead of leaving the original album intact with the alternates at the end. The programmatic flow is greatly affected, annoyingly so, especially on the Village Vanguard recordings, which are the centerpiece of this set. Having been arranged and released in the order of recording in previous CD issues so that one had the best sense possible of what these sets were, the genius in charge decided to lump together the multiple takes of „Gloria’s Step,“ „Alice In Wonderland,“ „All Of You,“ „Jade Visions,“ „Waltz For Debby,“ and more, totally destroying any sense of continuity and reality. Also, these CDs do not present the complete Riverside recordings; there are more alternate takes on the individual reissues, so if you’re a completist, Portrait In Jazz, Explorations, How My Heart Sings and The Complete Vanguard are all necessary addendum, as is the album with Cannonball Adderley, included in the „Complete Riverside“ box, but not in this set. It’s great to have the music available again but some advice to all CD producers, compilers, reissuers: IF IT’S NOT BROKE DON’T TRY AND FIX IT, STUPID! And need I mention how HORRIBLY UGLY the cover „art“ is? The original jackets were beautiful! To see a legacy like this be treated thusly is so disappointing. Way to really screw up a wonderful thing here.
