Bei mir auch nicht… jetzt kommt dann erst mal den Selects von Bechets, Mathews und Rivers sowie den Singles von Jonah Jones, Buddy Rich, Charles Lloyd, Ellington (Newport 1958, die Cosmic Scene hab ich schon). Das reicht dann für dieses Jahr. Danach kommt wohl Lunceford und das grosse Ellington Big Band Set dran, Herman will ich auch gerne bald… Jamal und ein paar andere fehlen mir auch noch – mal schauen, aber Hawkins muss sicher noch ne ganze Weile warten. Ich hab ja auch schon vieles von ihm, genau nachgesehen, was ich vom Mosaic noch nicht habe, habe ich noch nicht. Die grössten Lücken sind jedenfalls wohl sowieso die 1944er Keynote Sessions (davon gab’s ein grossartiges 4CD-Set) sowie die Mitt-40er-Sessions für Apollo (gibt’s auf der Savoy-CD „Rainbow Mist“) und Aladdin/Capitol (auf der Capitol-CD „Hollywood Stampede“) und die habe ich alle schon

.redbeansandricemal wieder ein ziemlich spannender twofer von freshsound, Blues Holiday von Paul Serrano (of katharsis bft fame), kombiniert mit dem ersten Album der MJT+3 noch nicht in der Besetzung mit Harold Mabern und Frank Strozier sondern mit Serrano/Nicky Hill/(Muhal) Richard Abrams… kenn ich bis auf den einen Track im BFT nicht, muss aber einfach gut sein…
BLUES HOLIDAY interessiert mich sehr, das MJT+3-album habe ich und finde es ganz großartig. bin ein fan des drummers walter perkins, der ja auch auf der von mir jetzt mehrfach empfohlenen william-parker-clarinet-trio-cd BOB’S PINK CADILLAC (mit robertson) spielt. obwohl das MJT-album insgesamt großartig ist, fällt mir vor allem richard abrams auf, dessen spiel auch im hardbop-kontext sehr viel sinn macht. offensichtlich ein toll kombinierter twofer.

Hm, mich hat das MJT+3 Album nicht so überzeugt, muss es wohl mal wieder anhören. Die späteren Aufnahmen mit Frank Strozier gefallen mir allerdings sehr.

The Complete Chick Webb & Ella Fitzgerald Decca Sessions (1929-1941) 7 CDs
Release Date: Early 2012The tandem of Chick Webb (“The King of the Savoy Ballroom”) and Ella Fitzgerald (“The First Lady of Song”) brought together a drummer whose powerful execution and rhythmic drive became a model for drummers up to the present day; and a vocalist who, although in her rudimentary years, was to influence practically all vocalists in the pop and jazz idiom.
The recordings gathered for this major retrospective contain the astonishing Webb and his tight band from their first records on Brunswick right through all of the recordings for American Decca. When Chick died in 1939 Ella was the new headliner for the band (led at various times by Edgar Sampson and Teddy McRae) until 1941. These recordings with the big band and splinter groups from the band are also included and not only do they reveal a consistently vibrant working unit but the increasing maturity of Ella’s natural swing and poise.
This focus on the Webb / Fitzgerald Decca sessions is an invaluable examination of an underappreciated band, an outstanding jazz innovator in Webb and one of the all-time eminent vocalists of any period. For the first time we have a complete retrospective of both Chick and Ella in the best sound ever captured of the music from mint 78s and original test pressings. Included are remarkable examples of Webb instrumentals that silenced all those “battle of the band” challengers at the Savoy: “Harlem Congo”, “Who Ya Hunchin’” and “Liza”.
Overlooked from this band are other notable jazz artists making some of their first recordings: R & B pioneer Louis Jordan; alto man Hilton Jefferson; Edgar Sampson (who wrote and arranged “Stompin’ At The Savoy” for Chick); early trombone great Jimmy Harrison; trumpeter Taft Jordan who was a mainstay with Webb before joining the mid 40s Ellington band; outstanding reedman Wayman Carver; the great Fletcher Henderson bassist and leader John Kirby; journeyman trumpeters Mario Bauza and Bobby Stark; pianist Ram Ramirez and reedman Eddie Barefield. Commentary on the music will be provided by noted author John McDonough and rare photographs will pepper the set

Das können aber nicht alle Ella/Chick Aufnahmen sein, denn die habe ich auf vier vollen CDS. Der Focus wird wohl auf die Instrumentals liegen.

Wie meinst Du? 7CDs sind ja mehr als 4 volle CDs, wird also bestimmt mehr sein, als Du hast, sollte nichts fehlen!
Hast Du nur die Vocals?So wie ich’s verstehe, beginnt das Set mit Chicks Aufnahmen (1929-39), wie oft Ella da zu hören ist, weiss ich nicht auswendig. Der Teil ist jedenfalls für mich am interessantesten. Ella hat die Band nach Chicks Tod 1939 weitergeleitet und aus der Zeit (1939-41) stamt dann der Rest des Sets.

Chick Webb hat ja wenig aufgenommen.

Ja, die Chrono Classics von Webb sind gerade Mal zwei CDs, plus ein paar Stücke auf dieser 3CD-Box („Complementary Tracks“). Das gibt dann mit den vier CDs mit Ella und ein paar Alternate Takes (die bei den Classics ja stets fehlen) wohl grad die 7CDs von Mosaic.
Die Alternative, um die instrumentalen Webb-Tracks alleine zu kriegen, wären anscheinend zwei Hep-CDs. Die kenne ich nicht, da ich die Webb-Chronologicals habe. Aber Hep klingt sicher sehr viel besser!
Dasselbe gilt wohl auch für Mosaic vs. Chrono und ev. auch Mosaic vs. Hep, wer weiss…Auf welchem Label sind denn die Ella/Webb-CDs erschienen? Die enden 1938, d.h. die Zeit, als Ella die Band weitergeführt hat, die ist da ja gar nicht abgedeckt, sollte also auch noch mehr mit Ella geben im Mosaic, was Du noch nicht kennst!

Aber nicht alle wurden mit Big Band Aufnahmen. Ella hat auch mal mit dem Savoy Eight aufgenommen.
Ja werde wohl zunächst mal die Tracklist abwarten.
