Virelles describes Nuna as “a metaphor for the piano as an ancient instrument.” While the sonorities of the Steinway Model D concert grand piano are often on full display in his playing, he pays equal emphasis to tempering the instrument’s natural resonance, connecting it more to the sound of folkloric instruments such as thumb pianos, harps and drums. He achieves this purely through touch and pedaling, without any other mechanical manipulation or “prepping.” Indeed, the entire album is a demonstration of Virelles’s masterful control of shading, dynamics and timbre.

Quartett haben erweiterte Besetzungen, mal mit Smith selber, mal mit Anthony Davis (p) usw – das betrifft drei der CDs. Somit sind vier CDs rein Streichquartett… sie sehen auf jeden Fall beide wieder sehr schmuck aus…

The Emerald Duets features four master drummers who have each, in their own unique fashion, contributed to the way modern drumming has developed in the past six decades and how it is now perceived. Pheeroan akLaff, Andrew Cyrille and Han Bennink are each featured on one disc and Jack DeJohnette on two discs, including Smith’s five-part composition ‚Paradise: The Gardens and Fountains‘ that fills the fifth disc of this boxed set in its entirety. The sessions with akLaff, Cyrille and DeJohnette mostly feature compositions by Wadada Leo Smith, including three very different versions of Smith’s powerful statement for the protection of freedom and democracy, ‚The Patriot Act, Unconstitutional and a Force that Destroys Democracy. ‚ The session with Bennink includes a combination of Smith’s compositions and collectively created tracks.

(7-CD set) String Quartets Nos. 1-12 focus on Wadada Leo Smith as a composer for strings. Smith began work on his first string quartet in 1965 and has composed string quartets and other works for strings throughout his career. Smith has also featured strings on a number of his other major works, including Ten Freedom Summers in 2011, Occupy The World in 2012 (TUM CD 037-2) and Rosa Parks: Pure Love in 2016/17 (TUM CD 057). String Quartets Nos. 1-12 represent a magnificent addition not only to Smith’s own recorded output but also to the literature for modern string quartet music in general. Compositions vary from relatively brief, one-part quartets of highly evocative and at times meditative soundscapes to the groundbreaking ‚String Quartet No. 11‘ that fills two discs with its nine movements.
String Quartets Nos. 1-12 were recorded by the RedKoral Quartet. The group was brought together by Smith during his tenure at CalArts and was featured on the recording of Ten Freedom Summers more than a decade ago and again on Rosa Parks: Pure Love as well as on numerous live performances of Smith’s string quartets and other works over the past decade. In addition, featured soloists on the recording include harpist Alison Bjorkedal (‚String Quartet No. 4‘), pianist Anthony Davis (‚String Quartet No. 6‘), percussionist Lynn Vartan (‚String Quartet No. 6‘), guitarist Stuart Fox (‚String Quartet No. 7‘) and voice artist Thomas Buckner (‚String Quartet No. 8‘) as well as Wadada Leo Smith himself on trumpet (‚String Quartet No. 6‘ and ‚String Quartet No. 8‘).

joel ross, the parable of the poet
ross‘ drittes blue-note-album, mit einer band aus freund:innen aufgenommen, hier haben wir immanuel wilkins (as) und marquis hill (tp) zusammen, dann noch maria grand (ts) und kalia vandeyer (tb), pianist sean mason, rick rosato (b) & craig weinrib (dm) bilden die rhythm section. am anfang ist mir das zu elegisch, aber in der mitte kommt ein grandioses, langes solo von wilkins (ausgerechnet), danach fällt alles für mich in eine ziemlich schöne ordnung. alle bekommen ein feature (die stücke sind um die solisten herum gebaut, der hintergrund sensibel arrangiert), als letztes erst der leader, das ist typisch joel ross. millenial-jazz, sanft & warm, kein bisschen angeberisch.

Der Opener „Prayer“ auf dem Album von Joel Ross ist sehr gut, erinnert etwas an Jarrett (ca. „Treasure Island“). Danach geht es interessant weiter, mir gefällt wie der Pianist Sean Mason seine Akzente setzt (auch ein Newcomer). Merke ich mir mal das Album.

ja, über mason liest man ja vielversprechendes, ich finde ihn auch ziemlich eigen hier, weiß aber noch nicht, ob ich das mag.

schönes neues album von ambarchi, in schweden aufgenommen, minimalistisch um ein bassostinato (I – III) oder einen fixen schlagzeuggroove (IV) gebaut, es ändert sich im verlauf nicht viel, aber genug. die sounds sind auf anhieb sehr attraktiv, ambarchis orgelflächen, von der gitarre gesteuert, die man nur kurz zwischendurch als solche wahrnimmt, liegen subtil drüber, irgendwo steht natürlich sofort „krautrock“, naja. sehr toll im ersten stück ist die doussn’gouni von gast christer bothén, bei der sofort cherry-stimmung aufkommt, der ist bei sowas aus schweden ja ohnehin immer geisterhaft präsent.

Bei Jazzmessengers (hallo @gypsy-tail-wind) gibt es beide auch schon als Pre-order. Dort sind die Presie aber deutlich höher. 110,- für die Stringquartets 1-12 und 80,- Euro für The Emerald Duets. Jazzmessengers gibt noch kein Datum an.

fujiyama, haynes, mori, quiet passion
lief jetzt zwei mal, gefällt mir sehr. haynes ist ja seit den 80ern (live seit den frühen 90ern) jemand, der mich immer wieder überrascht, hier z.b. wie selbstverständlich und klar er in so völlig freien kontexten agiert. obwohl es viel elektronik gibt, finde ich das alles ein bisschen (im guten sinn) altmodisch, bei mori merkt man zwar nicht mehr, dass sie mal drummerin war, aber ihre sounds könnten auch in den 60ern in freiburg oder köln entstanden sein, dazu das auf cecil taylor beharrende klavier von fujiyama, das gerne beklopft und angekratzt wird und attacken aushält; dazu aber eben dieser strahlende, leicht brüchige ton vom kornett, manchmal sanft elektronisch verlängert (die große trickkiste bleibt diesmal zu), weniger gestisch wie wadada, schon eher narrativ, nach haltung suchend. und was mich wirklich einnimmt über die gesamte länge, ist die kunst des zuhörens, ich verstehe hier wieder grundprinzipien freier kollektivmprovisation, bei der sich alle bescheiden zurückhalten, abwarten, raum lassen und die ideen nicht aus den überzeugungen, sondern aus den impulsen der anderen hernehmen. zwishendurch entsteht immer wieder was, was man nicht planen und nicht komponieren kann.

Die lief hier gestern auch schon wieder (zum dritten Mal schon) – wirklich ein schönes Album. Das mit dem Raum gefällt mir auch sehr gut hier, vieles wird geöffnet und nicht gleich vollgestellt, dass auch nicht alle drei auf allen Tracks mitwirken gehört da mit dazu. Dennoch wirkt das auch als Ganzes sehr aus einem Guss. Ich hab jedenfalls „Album des Monats“-Gefühle, auch wenn es dafür noch etwas früh ist.
