Wunderbare Quartet-Platte mit Williamson. Ich glaube, da gab es mal eine MOSAIC-Box mit den Pacific Jazz-Aufnahmen, in der diese Platte enthalten war. Einzeln waren die Aufnahmen auf CD recht schwer zu bekommen, wenn überhaupt.
Jetzt sicher nicht mehr, da gibt es ja genügend reissue-labels.--
Die Mosaic-Box habe ich – tolle Musik in der Tat! Ich kannte bloss bisher einfach nur das Cover hier:
Und erst jetzt merke ich, dass das gar nicht die gleiche Scheibe ist… so ist das eben, wenn man die Mosaic-Boxen hat und die Cover nicht kennt.

Fehlende cover, sessions nur im Rahmen des sets (man muß mitunter „halbe“ Platten dazukaufen) – und oft zu viele Platten im set (man sollte die Sachen ja auch irgendwann hören).
Einige Boxen habe ich bewußt stehengelassen. Es fehlte einfach zu viel oder die sets (Kenton, Miles Davis) waren zu umfangreich.
Die fehlenden cover wiegen da nicht so schwer, aber es ist manchmal schon ärgerlich.
Da kann man nicht immer einfach die Originale oder Japaner in den 2nd-hand-Kreislauf geben um ein bißchen Geld einzufahren bzw. Platz zu schaffen.Ein Freund von mir hat z.B. einen Haufen Giuffre-EPs, die er bei unserem nächsten Treffen mitbringt. Die scanne ich dann für meine MOSAIC-Box ein.
Na ja, so findet man immer was zu tun.

So mach ich das hie und da auch… wenn sich Gelegenheit bietet, ein paar schöne Scans ausdrucken und beilegen. Aber systhematisch hab ich das eben nie gemacht, hat mich früher auch kaum je wirklich gestört.
Das mit den zuvielen Alben finde ich kein Problem, aber das mit den halben Alben nervt manchmal schon ziemlich.

Hab an Mosaic nix auszusetzen, hab dieses Jahr viel bei Ihnen eingekauft(Lunceford Set ist noch unterwegs). Die Lieferzeiten sind recht lang und sie deklarieren oft falsch, der Zoll hat mich paar mal schon ermahnt.

Ja ja, der Zoll… da hatte ich auch schon ganz ärgerliche Erlebnisse (die die Auslieferung im schlimmsten Fall locker um 3-4 Wochen verzögert haben… sind ja schliesslich Beamten, die guten Herren). Mosaic kommt den Kunden ja mit der zu niedrigen Deklaration entgegen und nach meiner Erfahrung funktioniert das manchmal, in anderen Fällen kann das aber eben auch zu zusätzlichen Umtrieben führen.
Für die Sets mit älterem Jazz sind die Album-Cover natürlich keine grosse Frage – da waren die LPs ja eh nur Compilations von Stücken, die ursprünglich auf 78rpm Schellacks erschienen sind. Früher gab’s ja vergleichsweise recht viele Mosaic-Sets, auf denen der Blue Note-Output irgendwelcher Musiker gesammelt wurde, da war das mit den Covern eben wichtiger (natürlich auch bei Atlantic-, Pacific- oder Verve-Sets… zuletzt etwa beim MJQ oder dem Jamal-Set).

Mosaic hat ja in den letzten Jahren viele Sets aus den 30ern rausgebracht. Ein paar Covers wären schon schön, muss mal danach googeln.

In der Mitte findet sich ein schönes 28-seitiges Special mit einer Auswahl von Artikeln, Interviews, Kurznotizen, LP-Rezensionen usw. aus den ersten sechs Jahren (1954-59) – darunter eine Seite von Helen Merrill (Rubrik „La parole est à…“), Leonard Feathers Bericht vom Newport Festival 1955, Gene Rameys „Souvenirs de Bird“, ein Interview mit Monk von Ira Gitler, ein Interview mit Stan Getz etc. Sehr hübsch gemacht, düfte auch des Französischen nur halbwegs mächtige ansprechen (falls das Heft in Deutschland überhaupt zu kriegen ist).
Sonst im Heft: ein Artikel über Ibrahim Maalouf (Titel-Story), eine Story über Eugene Smith und die Lofts in den 50ern, ein kurzes Interview mit Daniel Humair über den verstorbenen Paul Motian (die Motian-Nummer, Heft 614, Mai 2010, wird für 5€ angeboten – gilt wohl nur innerhalb von Frankreich), die üblichen zahlreichen Rezensionen (unter den Chocs des Monats: Jazz Icons Box #5, die Bechet und Holiday Boxen von Universal, die Nat Cole Hip-O-Select Box, „Ella in Japan“, die Complete Columbia Album Collections von Woody Shaw und Wayne Shorter und mehr… eine Seite über die neueren Armstrong-Boxen ist ebenfalls zu finden) und eine kurze Story über Zappa in der Carnegie Hall.

Joe Williams, the urbane blues singer who worked with Count Basie, had signed his first solo album deal with Roulette, which lured other Birdland stars — Basie, Dinah Washington, Billy Eckstine, trumpeter Maynard Ferguson — away from bigger companies. „They did that with money,“ said Phoebe Jacobs. „They made offers that nobody could refuse.“
The label reeked of Mafia. Its president, Morris Levy, looked like a thug out of a Jimmy Cagney movie, with his gravel voice and bull neck. Many knew him as the co-owner of Birdland, but his bond with the Genovese crime family was no secret either. Fredric Dannen, a young business and crime reporter, interviewed Levy for his 1990 book Hit Men: Power Brokers and Fast Money Inside the Music Business. Levy bragged of having masterminded „the best payola system in the United States,“ referring to that era’s rampant bribing of DJs to plug certain singles on the air.
Phoebe Jacobs recalled him as „a very ambitious control freak,“ and a shrewd one. Weeks after its inception in late 1956, Roulette had its first number-one hit, Buddy Knox’s PARTY DOLL. Levy had also started a music publishing empire. In a common corruption of the day, pioneered by an earlier publishing mogul, Irving Mills, and the major swing band-leaders, Levy added his name to the composer credits of many of the songs he handled, thereby upping his share of the profits. Soon, this once-poor boy from the Bronx had made millions.
Phil Leshin, a bebop bassist who became the publicist for Birdland, knew him slightly. „My impression of him was he was a hoodlum,“ Leshin said. They had met years before, when Levy ran the coatcheck-hatcheck concession at a popular spot on 52nd Street. „Little by little he got involved in every damned club in New York, especially jazz clubs. They’d be running short of money, and he would loan them money, and that’s how he got a piece of the action. And he often wound up owning the places because of his ties to organized crime, which also controlled the tablecloths, the linens, the napkins, the garbage removal, all the stuff that you need to run a successful restaurant or club.“
For all his criminal activity, Levy escaped arrest until 1988, when he and a Genovese boss were nailed on a co-extortion charge. Levy got a 10-year sentence, but stayed free on bail pending an appeal. In 1990, he died of cancer — but rumors circulated for years that he was still alive, hiding out to avoid jail.
