Bin kein Hip Hop-Experte. Die backing tracks gefallen mir, auch wenn es eigentlich bloß loops sind. Die lyrics verstehe ich nicht und kann daher nichts darüber sagen. Aber kann man das Wort „Motherf*cker“ im Hip Hop überhaupt noch hören?

Bei mir funktionieren die links nicht, bzw. es gibt da keine Musik zu hören. Man kann aber auch den Weg über Warp gehen. Auch hier mag ich den backing track, aber kann zum rap nix sagen.

Man kann das nur im allerweitesten Sinne unter „Urban/Elektro/Hip Hop“ verbuchen, denn Genregrenzen fallen hier zwangsläufig flach. Nur das Prinzip des Sampling ist vom Hip Hop entlehnt. What a long strange trip! Brian Eno und Holger Czukay werden dabei blass.

There’s an amazing skit on „S“ with Eartha Kitt talking about not compromising for love. Where did you find that?
SZA: It’s from this documentary [„All By Myself,“ 1982]. The crazy part of that skit is that in the actual clip she’s sitting in her garden with no makeup on and no wig in a moo moo pajama dress surrounded by dirty puppies, but she still speaks with the confidence of a queen to that man asking her questions. You would have though she was on the red carpet at the Met Gala or something. It’s all about the energy. She just exuded pure boss and she had that dignified aristocratic accent. Sometimes I inadvertently sing in the same tone and accent she spoke in.

Da er bevorzugt mit Live-Instrumenten arbeitet, liegen Vergleiche zu The Roots nahe, aber Blitz hat seinen ganz eigene Stil. Mit seiner Band The Mighty Embassy Ensemble gab es Auftritte u.a. für Mos Def oder Talib Kweli. Auf Afropolitan Dreams gibt es u.a. auch einen Gastauftritt von Seun Kuti auf dessen aktuellem Album Blitz ebenfalls als Gast vertreten ist.

Mouse On Mars – Instrumentals

Zwischen Little Feat und Jazz hat immer auch wieder etwas Electronica Platz in meinem Herzen bzw. Ohren: Ich hatte zwar eigentlich nicht darauf wetten wollen, dass Mouse On Mars mich noch mal beeindrucken könnten, aber diese € 4,17 waren auf dem weltweiten Flohmarkt dann doch geschickt eingesetzt.
Instrumentals ist MOMs fünftes Album. Die Vorgänger waren bunte und verspielte, manchmal schon hyperaktive Electronica, voller kleiner Soundschnipsel, die kreuz und quer durch die Musik schwirrten. Diese Verspieltheit findet sich auch auf Instrumentals aber hier ist die Musik deutlich ruhiger, klingt wie in Zeitlupe gedehnt und scheint sich manchmal fast aufzulösen. Einige Tracks kratzen an der 10-Minuten Marke und die letzten beiden Stücke kommen sogar fast ohne Beats aus. Während der ebenfalls hervorragende Vorgänger Autoditacker in seiner Dichte und Verspieltheit manchmal fast schon aufdringlich und albern wirkte, ist Instrumentals ein nachdenklich und verträumt klingendes, in einigen Momenten sogar dunkles und unheimliches Album. MOM go Ambient Music oder MOM meet Autechre, könnte man sagen. Instrumentals ist eine andere, ungewöhnliche Seite von MOM und Neugierigen unbedingt zu empfehlen.
PS: Der Titel „Instrumentals“ ist wohl ironisch zu verstehen. Die Musik von MOM ist fast immer rein instrumental. Vielleicht spielen MOM mit dem Titel darauf an, dass ihre Musik auf diesem Album viel zurückhaltender ist als sonst – wie Instrumentalmusik es eben manchmal ist.

Captain Murphy – Duality (2012)
Ein Mixtape, das ein gewisser Flying Lotus alia Steven Ellison unter diesem Pseudonym veröffentlicht hat. Man kann es hier in zwei Versionen gratis und umsonst in zwei Versionen herunterladen, einmal als Instrumental und einmal mit darüber gerapten Raps. Die Instrumentalversion gefällt mir ganz gut in einer Art von cool goovender Ambient Music. Was die Raps in musikalischer Hinsicht an Gewinn bringen, verstehe ich nicht und als Nicht-American-English-Muttersprachler erschließt sich mir deren Wortsinn leider auch nicht. Vielleicht ergibt das alles mehr Sinn, wenn man sich das gut halbstündige Video, in dem kaum etwas von und mit und über Sex und Okkultismus in mehreren Lektionen ausgelassen wir, anschaut.

Solange über Brandy

Starkes Album von Brandy, das war mir vorher nicht so ganz klar. Es kann locker mit den besten Sachen von Alicia Keys und Aaliyah mithalten, obwohl Aaliyah und Keys vielleicht die größeren Hits hatten.

Jetzt das Debut von Brandy mit einer tollen Produktion. „Afrodisiac“ wurde dagegen allerdings sehr viel komplexer und ausgeklügelter produziert und arrangiert. Auf dem Debut erinnert Brandy in einigen Momenten auch ein wenig an Anita Baker und auf „Afrodisiac“ klingt sie manchmal sogar eher wie eine „moderne“ Mavis Staples oder Irma Thomas.
