"Kunst ist schön, macht aber viel Arbeit" (K. Valentin)Beides interessant, danke – aber ehrlich: wie viele Fitzelchen von Hasaan gibt es denn noch? Tjader ausgiebig im Trio könnte sehr reizvoll sein (kommt ja sicher später günstig als Doppel-CD wieder), kann ich aber nicht so wirklich einschätzen.

"Kunst ist schön, macht aber viel Arbeit" (K. Valentin)Da bin ich wohl mit mehr Freude dabei als beim letzten Gemischtwaren-Release, ich mag ja diese Version des Trios ziemlich gerne! Von Evans gibt’s halt einfach sehr, sehr viele richtig gute Aufnahmen (wie z.B. von Art Pepper aus den letzten Jahren ja auch). Wie viele man davon haben will, ist halt eine individuelle Entscheidung und weniger eine Aussage über die Qualität, dünkt mich. Dass die Label weitermachen, finde ich wenig überraschend (Fantasy tat das ja die Neunziger hindurch auch schon, als das noch gar nicht so üblich war).

War ned negativ gemeint …. es ist wertiges/verwertbaren Material vorhanden und der Markt spiegelt offenbar kommerzielle Nachfrage wieder …. passt schon ….

Ja …. und selbst dort ist bereits dermassen viel tolles Material veröffentlicht (u.a thnx, Laurie Pepper), dass ich bei Anlassfall „prüfe“ ….

Archie Shepp’s world has always been filled with fire music, and eventually Fire Music. Before that landmark LP, Shepp made Four for Trane—his August 1964 beachhead with Impulse. And even before that, as it turns out, came this one blip—the earliest Shepp leader project yet on record. Under supervision of the artist, this previously unissued demo recording is now available from Triple Point Records.
As the cover of Derailleur suggests, Shepp tries out some surprising combinations for the session. The playlist includes two of Archie’s earliest documented compositions—the jagged 5/4 statement “Viva Jomo” and a shuffling blues named for his Florida homeland. And an homage to Maestro Ellington of course.
Archie had already defined his voice while a sideman and co-leader; now he was looking for his team. Shepp momentarily adopted the quartet that Steve Lacy and Roswell Rudd led in the Village. This assemblage delivered a spontaneous demo, and engineer Art Crist captured it in a mono studio session. Buried in Archie’s tape archive was this batch of music that was all but forgotten; now Triple Point has polished it into crisp perfection.

BirdlikeThe Found Tapes: Live in Los Angeles is a four LP box set from Tribe Records co-founder Phil Ranelin, celebrating a trio of LA club performances from 1978-1981 which remain especially significant to the visionary trombonist. Backed by a young Billy Childs on piano, Ralph Penland on drums, and Tony Dumas on bass, Ranelin was in peak form as a player and bandleader during this period. This is particularly true of one specific outing at the now shuttered Maiden Voyage in Los Angeles on July 19, 1981, which is presented in full within this set. The audio was restored from decades old cassette tapes which have never been heard until now. A master trombonist of the J.J. Johnson tradition, Ranelin’s career has spanned over five decades with eleven records as a solo artist, four as a Freddie Hubbard sideman, session recordings for Motown, and work with artists ranging from Stevie Wonder and Ella Fitzgerald to Red Hot Chili Peppers and Telefon Tel Aviv. The release is available everywhere on January 26th.
