Fats Domino – I’m Gonna Be A Wheel Someday

„When I was 21 years old decided that I wanted to become a great artist. I’d won several art competitions when I was a child and was considered something of a prodigy (I could draw a train that looked like a train when I was 3 years old) and had taken art courses and studied privately all my growing years(…). My first act of rebellious independence was when I decided to be an artist and ran off to Mexico for 3 months to discover myself, and marijuana. When I came back through New Orleans on my way to New York, I had sprouted a scraggly beard and was talking hip beat talk and my father made me stay at a motel rather than destroy my mother’s image of me. He did, however, buy a small painting for $75 so that I would be able to buy a train ticket to New York.“

Hat das eigentlich einen bestimmten Grund dass Bo Diddley ständig seinen eigenen Namen – okay war ja eigentlich nicht seiner – in seinen Songtiteln verwandt hat?

8. Wilson Pickett – Funky Broadway

„[T]his guy had magic for me. When I first heard ‚In The Midnight Hour‘ on the radio in 1965 I dove into New York record stores looking for it. I was with a club band called The Random Concept at the time and we immediately started learning the parts off the record. The next year he released ‚Everybody Needs Somebody To Love‘ and the year after came ‚Funky Broadway‘ and my musical world was a joyous explosion.“

10. Bo Diddley – I’m High Again

„Our slogan is happiness,“ erklärte Danny Taylor und Simeon ergänzt: „Our music is emotional. I think it’s something you feel. We like happiness, clapping hands, dancing.“

Und außerdem: „Insane clothing, long, wind blown hair for everybody, shrimp tails at Max’s Kansas City, bright colors, getting up after twelve noon, movement, nature and funky art.“

Drogen? Neee, die natural highs sind genug… es sei denn, die Herren wollen sich mal einen kleinen Spaß gönnen. Und damit also: „Auf geht’s, Jungs, auf ins Cockpit!“

Barry Bryant hat wieder alle Hebel in Gang gesetzt und für das Cover des bevorstehenden zweiten Apples-Album „Contact“ einen echten Pan Am-Jet ausgeliehen bekommen… Yay!

Silver Apples – Fantasies

„Let’s stop playing,“ sagt Simeon am Ende dieses Schlusstracks auf „Contact“ und kichernd hören er und Danny dann auch auf, leider noch nicht ahnend, dass die ausgegebene Parole ungefähr einen Monat nach Veröffentlichung des Albums eine, ähem, eigentümliche Eigendynamik entwickeln sollte.

Zuvor zeichneten sich allerdings noch ganz andere Probleme ab. Zwar hatte sich das Debütalbum sehr anständig verkauft, es konnte jedoch nicht übertünchen, dass Kapps Tage der Sechziger finanziell betrachtet angezählt waren. Die ersten Angestellten schauten sich schon nach anderen Jobs um und in den Vertrag der Apples wurde nun ein Paragraph hinzugefügt, der besagte, dass sie ‚auf jeden Fall‘ noch ein zweites Album aufnehmen und veröffentlichen würden und nicht einfach vor die Tür gesetzt werden konnten. Im Gegenzug bedeutete es, sich zu beeilen und keine kostbare Zeit zu vergeuden.

„[S]o we turned up the heat. I think the album reflects that- it’s much rougher and rawer than the first. We had decided that we wanted a rawer sound anyway. We talked about getting a sound like as if the wires were sending razor blades into the speakers and mincing them. But we were rushed by the schedule and that added to it.“

Spaßiger wurde es dann beim Covershot:

„Danny and I had snuck a bunch of dope and dope paraphernalia aboard and scattered it about for each shoot. We just did it for a goof. All the rock and roll bands of the time were doing little (and not so little) dope songs and dope promotions and we thought it was silly. We smoked the occasional joint and did the occasional tab but that wasn’t basis for a message or some big deal like it was with so many of the others. We did it on „Contact“ for a giggle. Barry was in on it and was snickering and snorting in the background during all this to the point of distraction. The Pan Am representative was totally unaware of what we were doing and was pasting Pan Am logos in all the cockpits so as to be sure and get a plug for the airline on the record cover. Once we had the proofs, we had a good laugh.“
