Jahrhundert. Gemäss Orrin Keepnews, der die Riverside-Aufnahmen von Monk produziert hat, hätte es keiner für bare Münze genommen, als Monk behauptet habe, das Stück sei seine „favorite hymn“.

Mit diesem Quartett spielte Hawkins im Onyx Club an der 52nd Street. Die Session findet man u.a. in der abgebildeten Box mit Monks kompletten Prestige-Sessions oder der unten abgebildeten „Bean and the Boys“ (Prestige/Fantasy).
Coleman Hawkins & Thelonious MonkMonk spielt hier nach Hawkins Solo einen ganzen Chorus – und man erkennt ihn in der Tat sofort und ganz unmissverständlich. Die absteigenden Ganztonläufe, die eigenwillige Rhythmik, die harmonische Waghalsigkeit – alles schon da! Hawkins legt nach dem Klaviersolo nach, das Stück endet ohne Wiederholung des Themas (so die Melodie, die zu Beginn nach Monks Intro erklingt, überhaupt als Thema zu betrachten ist, es klingt so, als könnten nur gerade die erste Phrase und die Changes festgelegt worden sein – letztere scheinen vertraut, aber leider ich weiss nicht, auf welchem Stück sie beruhen).

Hawkins as much as any jazz musician transcended styles and eras. His willingness to hire a modernist like Monk – whose work here, especially in his dazzling solo on „Flyin’ Hawk,“ is instantly identifiable and shows more than a hint of the harmonic adventurousness that would come to define his playing – was completely in character. Hawkins embraced Monk’s approach to the piano at a time when many of his contemporaries viewed it with skepticism or even hostility; his stamp of approval provided many listeners, young [Bob] Weinstock [der 1949 Prestige Records gründete] among them, with an introduction to the music of Monk and many other young practitioners of the new sound that came to be know as bebop.(aus den Liner Notes zur abgebildeten Monk 3-CD-Box)

Schöner, mir wohlbekannter Auftakt – auch wenn Monks „Thelonious“ ein fast noch besserer Jingle gewesen wäre. Und dann werden wir gleich ein paar Jahre in die Vergangenheit geschleudert?

Das Stück braucht es später noch in ganzer Länge, aber hätte gewiss auch gepasst, ja.

Live, Spotlite, New York, NY, Ende Juni 1946
von: Showtime at the Spotlite, 52nd Street, New York City, June 1946 (Uptown, 2 CD, 2008)Dizzy Gillespie nahm im Februar 1944 ebenfalls mit Coleman Hawkins auf. Ein Jahr später wurden Charlie Parker und er präsenter, sie nahmen gemeinsam für kleine Label ein paar Platten auf, spielten im Three Deuces in New York, füllten zweimal die Town Hall in New York (das zweite Konzert vom Juni ist auch bei Uptown greifbar – unbedingte Empfehlung!). Im Dezember gingen die beiden nach Kalifornien, wo sie eher zögerlich aufgenommen wurde. Parker blieb dort als Dizzy wieder nach New York zurückkehrte. Schon im Sommer 1945 hatte Gillespie eine erste Big Band gestartet, doch erst beim zweiten Anlauf 1946 gelang es wirklich. Gillespies ehemaliger Boss Billy Eckstine erlaube ihm, einige Tadd Dameron-Arrangements zu verwenden und mit der Hilfe des Arrangeurs Gil Fuller wurde das Repertoire von Gillespies Combo in Big Band-Charts umgewandelt. Monk sass nur kurze Zeit in dieser Big Band, er solierte kaum und war über Gil Fullers Arrangement seiner Ballade „‘Round Midnight“ unglücklich.
Uptown hat vor ein paar Jahren die umfassendste Veröffentlichung der Radio-Aufnahmen aus dem Spotlite Club herausgebracht. Wir hören die zweite Version von „Second Balcony Jump“ aus dem Set. Das Trompetensolo stammt von Dave Burns, der Gillespies Musik schon länger kannte und sich nicht lumpen lässt. Dann folgt James Moody am Tenorsax, kurz von Slim Moore an der Posaune unterbrochen. Und schliesslich hören wir auch ein kurzes Solo von Thelonious Monk.
