Die Aufmachung des „Lady in Satin“-Sets ist übrigens recht schlicht, ein paar Seiten Kommentar im dünnen Booklet (auf dünnem Papier), das ganze ein altmodisches „jumbo“ Jewelcase. Reingehört habe ich noch nicht. Die Liners von Phil Schaap für die Legacy-Edition gibt es auch nicht nochmal (was schon passt, aber das Booklet ist so klein gedruckt, das Papier so dünn, das schreit nach Sparübung, ein Blatt und ein paar Gramm mehr waren wohl nciht drin).

With the Jazz World celebrating 100 years of Lady Day’s birth, and when no new musical material seemed to be possibly added to the singer’s large and wonderful output, Uptown Records presents this collection of 2-CDs devoted to Billie, on which various previously unknown broadcast recordings come to light. The subtitle speaks about Holiday’s impossibility to work in New York clubs during most of those years, due to losing her cabaret card (a document issued by the New York police) because of her problems with drugs and alcohol.
The broadcasts present her in various different venues, in America and abroad, and with a diversity of accompanying musicians. But what’s most remarkable here, as it couldn’t be otherwise, is Billie’s voice. The program presents new versions of songs from her usual repertoire, but also a few rarities, such a 1948 Los Angeles reading of her classic but not so often recorded “Strange Fruit” (that program also includes the rarely heard “Maybe You’ll Be There”), and a 1949 version throughout and sound quality is quite good considering the rarity of these documents. An amazing discovery.

(Von CD 1 gibt es was im ESP-Disk‘ 5-CD-Set, aber da mit dem Datum 2. Juni 1949 – bringe das auf die Schnelle gerade nicht zusammen, aber die Musiker scheinen dieselben zu sein und an solchen „Just Jazz“-Konzerten von Gene norman nahm Holiday wohl nicht allzu oft teil, abwarten, ob das Uptown-Booklet da Klärung bietet, jedenfalls sind das deutlich mehr Tracks, v.a. gibt es die Norvo-Tracks – ohne Billie – bei ESP natürlich schonmal nicht. Auch aus dem Storyville in Boston gibt es bei ESP schon einiges, aber angeblich von Herbst 1951 bzw. Herbst 1953, auch von der Steve Allen Show gibt es bei ESP schon was, aber wenn die Angaben stimmen, so gibt es da in der Tat wie bei den Storyville-Aufnahmen keine Überlappungen.)
