Gary Mario Thompson was born in Sun Valley CA on 23 September 1951. His father was in The U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Gary’s mother was Concert pianist and Soprano Vocalist. His uncle Chuck Thompson was a Drummer for jazz greats Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Hampton Hawes. Gary’s grandmother worked for Charlie Chaplin in New York. She was given a Stradivarius violin as a present. At age 13 Gary was given a beat up two string guitar and fumbled with it for a year. He then got a job and bought his first electric guitar. Thompson began his musical career at the age of 16, playing guitar with the Chicago Wicker Park Garage Band at Sorority’s and Fraternity houses at Northwestern University, Purdue University and others. While attending Tuley High School in Chicago IL, Gary played guitar with local groups The Mystics, The Outlaws. Gary played guitar with The Notations. While Gary attended Kennedy King College in Chicago IL, he was in their Jazz Ensemble. Thompson was in the band Ememanon a derivative of the band Second Coming on Mercury Records when they auditioned for Curtis Mayfield. Curtis Mayfield chose Gary and Gary became a reasonably prominent member of the Curtis Mayfield band…
