es gibt ein bisschen was zu feiern: Downbeat steht jetzt auf archive.org, bis 1961 ist alles frei lesbar, link… Das ist natuerlich nicht nur wegen Chuck Thompson interessant – aber schon auch… im folgendem, ergaenzend zu diesem post weiter oben, der die gleiche Zeit mit Lokalzeitungen aus SF studiert…
die ersten beiden Eintraege sind fast die interessantesten, weil sie ein bisschen die Zeit zwischen der Fernsehsendung mit Sonny Criss (Nov 1957, letzte Aufnahmesession) und dem Start in San Francisco ausfuellen… und waren bestimmt beides gute Bands – wir koennen jetzt sagen, dass Thompson auch mit Billie Holiday gespielt hat… die Eintraege sind alle aus solchen Regionalkolumnen, die ersten zwei fuer LA, ab dann fuer SF

Sonny Stitt was held over at the Jazz Workshop until Jan. 14, then replaced by Johnny Griffin. Stitt used drummer Chuck Thompson and the talented Eddie Kahn on bass . . . Kahn also plays after hours at Bop City with alto and flute newcomer Leo Wright, who in turn works a regular second job at The Cellar. Hier ist interessant, dass Hawes Name weggenommen wurde… Wegen seiner inzwischen beruehmten Verhaftung im November 58 kann er naemlich kaum dabei gewesen sein…
