James Newton A lot of people don’t know that there was a dialogue between Eric Dolphy and Bird when Bird was in Camarillo. One of the things that Bird had discussed with Eric that he wanted to get done was to have the ability to study with Varèse, and Eric kept that in himself. That’s just my humble opinion that he just kept it in his mind. He learned Varèse’s seminal flute solo, Density 21.5. Hale Smith took Eric to Varèse’s house in New York because he knew him, and after an extended session going through the work, Varèse signed a copy of Density 21.5 score, dedicated to Eric. It is in the Library of Congress.

Das Stück „Gazzelloni“ (auf „Out to Lunch“ zu finden), das wissen hier wohl längst alle interessierten Parteien, hat Dolphy dem italienischen Flötisten Severino Gazzelloni (1919-1992) gewidmet. Dessen Einspielung von „Density 21.5“ findet man u.a. in der Tube, oder (in meinem Fall) auf dieser alten CD:
Interessante Geschichte, Flurin. Davon wusste ich nicht. Klar, der Zusammenhang mit dem Titel „Gazzelloni“ ist mir bekannt gewesen. Aber davon das Severino Gazzelloni „Density 21.5“ eingespielt hat nicht. Ich habe mir für kleines Geld die CD bestellt. Vielen Dank für diese Zeilen!
