Neben John Coltrane ein weiterer Todesfall des Jahres 1967: Billy Strayhorn, der ungleiche Partner Duke Ellingtons. Irgendwie ging auch damit eine Epoche zu Ende. Ellington nahm im gleichen Jahr als quasi Requiem das Album AND HIS MOTHER CALLED HIM BILL auf, das 1968 veröffentlicht wurde.
