neu auf blue note, eingespielt mit seinem quartett (sam harris, harish raghavan, justin brown), wieder eine spur reifer und eigener. es gibt kaum eine stimme im aktuellen jazz, die mich emotional so sehr kriegt, sein ton ist einzigartig, mit harris arbeitet er an einem pathos-konzet, das nichts poliertes, nichts glattes hat. mir sind einige konpositionen zu unnötig kompliziert, auch ist die rolle des drummers irgendwie nicht ganz geklärt, aber ab der hälfte wird es wirklich grandios.
die liner notes sind von archie shepp, es gibt eine eulogy für roy hargrove, und zwei ziemlich irre fender-rhodes-einsätze. an dieser aufnahme wird sich einiges in diesem jahr messen lassen müssen.

Aber wo konntest Du die denn schon hören, kommt erst am 12. Juni, oder nicht?mmh, sagen wir so, es ergab sich eine möglichkeit. ich habe das vinyl vorbestellt, das kommt aber erst ende des monats. hier hatte ich mich am bandcamp-vö-datum orientiert, das war fälschlicherweise der 5.6. aber in diesem thread sind ja vorankündigungen erlaubt.

erstes studioalbum von roy ayers seit 18 jahren.
In February 2018, Roy Ayers performed four sold out shows in Los Angeles as part of the Jazz Is Dead Black History Month series. It wasn’t until 2020 that fans of Ayers discovered that in addition to those shows, the legendary vibraphone player had also recorded an entire album of new material with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
Over the course of its eight original compositions, written collaboratively by Younge, Shaheed Muhammad & Ayers and recorded at Younge’s Linear Labs in Los Angeles, the resulting album sounds both like an unearthed an unreleased album from Ayers’ classic period in the 1970s (which produced the oft-sampled “Red, Black & Green,” “We Live In Brooklyn, Baby,” “Everybody Loves The Sunshine,” and “Running Away), as well as something startling, new and unexpected.
Joining Ayers, Younge & Shaheed Muhammad on this musical journey are drummer Greg Paul, vocalists Loren Oden, Joy Gilliam, Saudia Yasmein, Elgin Clark & Anitra Castleberry, as well as Phil Ranelin & Wendell Harrison of the legendary Spiritual Jazz label Tribe Records.
The 8 tracks on this album testify to the love not only of a legendary musician’s legacy, but to the vitality & necessity of this music and these sounds in the present era, a thread that will likely run throughout all of the upcoming releases from Jazz Is Dead Records.releases June 19, 2020

Da bin ich wohl nicht Publikum für … mag auch die älteren Sachen wenig – nur die ganz frühen mit Jack Wilson. Aber das ist auch keine Musik zum Hinsitzen und Zuhören. Aber der „Jazz is Dead“-Aufnäher ist schon sehr cool

die drums sind sehr interessant. die produzenten haben auch schon gary bartz, joao donato, lonnie liston smith, doug und jean carn usw. reaktiviert. zurück zu den leibhaftigen quellen ihrer samples, sozusagen – für die sich ja blue note & co. nicht mehr interessieren. ich bin dafür sehr offen.

das aktuelle album des monats von @lysol, ich habe es erst heute hören können und war sehr angetan. ausbalancierte band, die unaufgeregt ideen hin und her wirft und sich dabei auf relativ feste grooves einigt. ohne cleaver gab es ja schon SERAPHIC LIGHT, aber mit ihm gibt es plötzlich hiphop und walzer, es rollt sehr cool, aber dabei bleibt’s natürlich nicht. beeindruckend die handfeste melancholie von carter auf tenor, trompete (sehr toll) und flöte, der sich shipp niemals in den weg stellt, gerade er überrascht mich hier am meisten. sehr hippe, aktuelle musik.

Wieder einmal sehr schön beschrieben @vorgarten. Die Band bildet wirklich ein grundsolides Fundament auf dem so vieles passiert. Cleaver hatte ich bisher nicht auf dem Schirm. Ein toller Drummer.

Charles Tolliver announces first album in 13 years

Composer, trumpeter, educator and Strata-East founder signs to Gearbox to release Connect this summer
The New York based musician Charles Tolliver has announced his first studio album in 13 years. The self-taught trumpeter has been active since the 1960s – he made his recording debut with Jackie McLean on Blue Note in 1964. His last studio album, 2007’s With Love, was also released by Blue Note.
Now signed to Gearbox Records, Tolliver recorded his new album Connect at RAK Studios last November with a band including Jesse Davis on alto saxophone, Keith Brown on piano, Buster Williams on double bass and Lenny White on drums, as well as Gearbox saxophonist Binker Golding appearing on two of its tracks. It was engineered by Tony Platt.
“With both of our collective recording label expertise,” says Tolliver, “a recording of my touring band could and would be done. I chose to CONNECT consummate artists whose performances represent absolutely THE Real Deal in this artform.”
Charles Tolliver’s Connect will be released this summer.
