Exact dates for when these musical statements were made are lost in Yusuf’s memory bank but we can assume that they are post-Coltrane, post-Black Unity Trio and infused with the Pan-Africanism movement’s radical awakening that swept through African American communities during the 60s, the recordings probably sit in the first half of the 1970s (although I could be completely wrong).

Still sharp and living in Florida these days, Yusuf sent Wewantsounds’ Matt Robin an unrequested CD-R, containing these mysterious pieces of esoteric wonder. Undated but certainly from two different sessions, Yusuf plays every instrument on the tracks (alto, tenor, flute, cello and vocals) except for the perfectly judged percussion and drums of William Holmes, leaping from free jazz wildness to muted tablas as the composition demanded. A Dan Nuby is also mentioned as the bass player but in reality, Dan is Yusuf and Yusuf is Dan.

    […]

An intoxicating listen, it is always an honour to explore ‘lost’ music and ‘Journey to the Ancient’ is a potent and unusually emotive record that only amplifies the question of what else are we missing from a lifetime of cutting-edge creativity from Yusuf Mumin? 9/10.

    https://www.truthandliesmusic.com/magazine/yusuf-mumin-journey-to-the-ancient-wewantsounds-a-review

The playing across these sessions is ritualistic and textural, not built for entertainment but for invocation. Holmes’ drums provide rhythmic counterpoint on the second and fourth tracks, while the “Dan Nuby” bass parts are in fact Mumin himself, multitracked to deepen the music’s foundation. At times the atmosphere recalls Norman Howard’s sombre lyricism; elsewhere, the spacious searching gestures anticipate Abdul Wadud’s later work on cello.

If the recording dates remain uncertain, the significance of this music is not. Journey to the Ancient illuminates an overlooked corner of Midwestern free jazz and restores to the narrative a voice too often left in shadow. More than that, it presents Mumin not just as a musician but as a thinker and seeker, for whom music was inseparable from cosmology, philosophy and the lived struggle of diaspora.

This release is not a posthumous reconstruction but a living message, one that has taken decades to reach us. Heard now, it is as urgent and necessary as ever — a reminder that the story of free jazz remains unfinished, still yielding hidden truths.
