Dennis BlandfordDie Band war in den Anfangstagen 68-71 sicherlich noch nicht auf ihrem musikalischen Zenith. Das könnte man ja trotz der innigen Liebe zum unkaputtbaren Aqualung Album mal beiläufig bemerken.
Sehr richtig, die innovativste Zeit war 1972-1975. Die 76’er Platte lassen wir mal ruhen und die Besetzung von 1977-1979 war die musikalisch am besten eingespielte Formation mit den Highlights „SFTW“ und „HH“.
Auf das Remastering von Aqualung bin ich sehr gespannt, allerdings verspreche ich mir nichts von etwaigem Bonusmaterial, denn Tomorrow Was Today und Hard Headed English General sind recht medioker und laut Anderson gibt es keine weiteren Outtakes. (Abgesehen von Lick Your Fingers Clean)--

Medioker finde ich zu hart. Es sind roughe Livetakes, die im Studio anders klingen könnten u. denen etwas die Flöte fehlt. Sieht man es nüchtern wurde in 71 lediglich die geniale „Life’s a long song“ EP eingespielt (Enter Barriemore B..) Aqualung entstand im Dezember 1970. Die oben genannten Stücke wurden ab 1972 live gespielt u. gehören eher der thick as a brick / passion play Ära an.
Ich erhoffe nichts, vielleicht bekomme ich dann etwas.

About the Aqualung remix, this was all done at 96K and in particular the new stereo mix is something that I’m very proud of, since the recording was not done under the best circumstances (though what’s on tape is better than the original mix would suggest). Having failed to get EMI to go Blu-Ray on this (which is the high res audio format I’m moving to for a forthcoming solo record), I’m still urging them to at least do a DVDA. The problem with the major labels is that although there are genuine music lovers still in these companies, they are beholden to the accountants who run things. This was not an issue with Crimson reissues because Robert owns all the copyrights, so we could do what we wanted with them. I’m going to pursue the idea of somehow trying to make the high res formats available if the companies won’t do it, but don’t hold your breath – there’s a lot of bureaucracy involved.At least the success of the Crimson reissues has led a to more and more artists from this era coming to the conclusion that a sympathetic remix (by which I mean one that is super faithful to the original mix in every respect, using the same balance, EQ, stereo placement, plate reverbs..etc..), can do what no amount of remastering the original mixes can do in bringing out sonic clarity. So in terms of the model of deluxe editions with the original mix, a new stereo mix, 5.1 mix, and mixes of previously unheard out-takes found on the reels, there are more of these kind of projects on the way, though I can’t say more at present. I just hope that more often that not we can incorporate a high res format into these editions. Watch this space I guess…

Anonymus: Was in Abbey Road recently and popped into Studio 3 to hear a beautiful alternate version of ‚Cheap Day Return‘ with a lovely oboe part. Don’t know if that’ll appear but it just so happened that the engineer was going through ‚Aqualung‘ on that day.--

Maybe there was just a demo put down, but they are not complete songs, just incomplete backing tracks. The men at EMI were kind of hankering after putting one of those incomplete ideas out just for the fans, and I said “No.” …“„It’s not for public consumption. It’s a private moment involving us all to the point where you go, “This doesn’t work.” Especially when these bits are not very well played, it doesn’t serve the reputations of the musicians when you are just fooling around in the studio with an idea that doesn’t go anywhere. I have to draw the line somewhere, and I’ve drawn it pretty firmly a long time ago with a few pieces of music that were incomplete…“

Die für Tull Fanatiker interessanten Embryofassungen einiger Stücke auf CD 2 sind nett aber nicht essentiell. Leider.
104 Euro sind mir bei der Deluxe Edition einfach zu viel Geld für das was geboten wird.--

Blu-Ray, Surround Mixe, DVD-A – kann ich nichts mit anfangen. Die Vinyl LP hab ich schon 4X ( D,UK, ESP und Picture Vinyl) Das Buch wäre ganz nett, aber nicht für 100 Euro.

in der Tat… das da ist IMHO der Benchmark:
CD Chrysalis Records CDP 32 1044 2, noch vor der immer hochglobten DCC-Ausgabe… besser hab ich Aqualung noch nicht gehört, in dieser Chrysalis CD auch mit nicht ganz so dünnen blutlosen Drums von Clive Bunker (unter denen auch die DCC leidet), sondern angemessen kraftvoll….aber da bisher keine der verfügbaren Aqualung-Ausgaben 100% befriedigend ist, sogar eher ziemlich weg davon, erwarte ich mir von nem remix eigentlich ne klare Steigerung… um dann wahrschenlich umso enttäuschter zu sein

aber auch mir reicht die Do-CD locker, mir hätte auch eine simple CD mit schlichtweg dem Album drauf gereicht, auf ein paar krude und zusammengekratzte Outtakes kann ich gut verzichten

Wirklich interessant sind für mich die Early Versions von My God, Wind Up und Up The Pool. Der Take 2 von Slipstream und die volle Version von Wond’ring Aloud/Again werden auch nicht ohne sein. Ansonsten hoffe ich auch auf eine deutliche Klangverbesserung.
