Anouar Brahem – The Astounding Eyes Of Rita ****redbeansandrice“auf den Plätzen“ war ein Versprecher – da ging es mir vor allem um die Validität des Albumtitels von Mitchell – anders gesagt, Bearcat und Triple Threat kenn ich noch nicht, wollte sie aber auch nicht weglassen, da ich große Hoffnungen hab; At the Village Vanguard ist irgendwie eine offene Rechnung, die muss ich an sich unbedingt nochmal hören, öfters, bevor ich sie ernsthaft liste (also: denk dir vielleicht die drei weg und lies Mitchell als bestmögliche aber meinerseits absolut vertretbare Platzierung); allerdings: ich hab At the Village Vanguard insgesamt, auch wenn es überwiegend lange her ist, neben Ole, Grab this und Kerry Dancers am meisten gehört, absolut ok und schön, aber ich hab den starken Verdacht, dass das Album den meisten anderen Hörern deutlich besser gefällt, kommt vor… nach momentanem Eindruck wäre das in der Tat sowas wie Platz 12 oder 13 für Village Vanguard… das sind immer noch verdammt starke Alben…
Alles klar, ich dachte dafür gäbe es vielleicht einen spezifischen Grund.

nail75Strata ist ungefähr zur gleichen Zeit entstanden wie „Multiplication Table“ und auf beiden spielt William Parker. Im Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD wird es als „as dry as its title“ beschrieben. Das kann ich mir sehr gut vorstellen, denn auch auf Strata ist die Musik sehr kopflastig.
Ich glaube von dem, was ich jetzt über Strata gelesen habe und die Instrumentierung (zwei Bläser, Bass, Piano) betrachtend, daß The Multiplication Table einen gänzlich anderen Ansatz hat. Steht bei Strata die Verbindung von Komposition und Improvisation im Vordergrund, ist TMT über weite Strecken ein sehr hochenergetisches Free-Jazz-Album. Es ist hochspannend Shipp, Susie Ibarra und William Parker beim ekstatischen Umkrempeln von Standards oder auch in ausgedünnteren Eigenkompositionen Shipps zuzuhören. Kopflastig, akademisch oder trocken finde ich das Album jedenfalls in keinem Fall, trotz Liner Notes die Verbindungen schlagen von Andrew Hill über Alexander Scriabin bis hin zu Pierre Boulez. Die Musik bleibt auch ohne das nachvollziehbar und zugänglich.
Vielleicht liegt es einfach an der Auswahl der Einspielungen, die du von ihm kennst, daß du ihn als zu verkopft empfindest. Ich denke, daß dir zum Beispiel das diesjährige Harmonic Disorder sehr viel besser gefallen könnte.

was sagst du zu Blue and Sentimental, nail (mal abgesehen von der Frage, ob es wirklich besser ist als Live at the Village Vanguard
)? achso, ein spezifischer Grund in Sachen Village Vanguard: als ich 15 war und die Weisheitszähne rauskriegen sollte habe ich mir vorher Village Vanguard und Cannonball Adderley in San Francisco gekauft… Village Vanguard war irgendwie keine Hilfe, das hab ich nie so ganz verwunden; spezifischer geht es wohl kaum 
in Sachen Matthew Shipp: ich kenn ihn noch viel zu wenig, aber worauf ich sehnsüchtig warte ist das neue Album von Allen Lowe mit Roswell Rudd und Matthew Shipp an der Orgel, das im Sommer erscheinen soll… („the thing of Matt playing Farfisa, though somewhat of a risk, turned out to be the best idea I had„)
