Here is Mati & The Music: 52 Record Covers 1955/2005, a limited edition book of 500 numbered copies including a double album by Miles Davis. The album features a previously unreleased concert from his legendary „Bitches Brew“ European tour with a portrait of Betty Davis on the cover.
Mati Klarwein’s place in the history of 20th century art is unique, nestling at the crossroads of painting and music. From the end of the 1960s, a period as fruitful as it was revolutionary, numerous musicians such as Miles Davis, Carlos Santana and Jimi Hendrix recognised a statement of intent in his work and used it on their record covers as a manifesto.

Mati Klarwein, Visionary Artist
Son of a Bauhaus architect and an opera singer, Mati Klarwein was born in Germany in 1932, he grew up in Israel, started painting in Paris, in Fernand Léger’s studio where he met Salvador Dali, then later in the Viennese painter Ernst Fuchs’ studio, he obtained French nationality with the help of Madame Mal-raux, played jazz with Boris Vian before moving to New York in the mid 1960s in the middle of the hippy revolution and he never stopped moving his studio across the world from India, Bali and Morocco to Brazil, Greece, Ghana, Cuba and else-where, before ending up in his Balearic village of predilection, Deia, where he passed away in March 2002.
His oeuvre consists of more than 600 paintings, including 270 portraits, 280 landscapes, which he called Inscapes, and over 100 Improved Paintings, canvases bought at flea markets which he then adapted into his own work.

Accompanying the launch of this book is a double album of a previously unre-leased Miles Davis concert that was part of his 1969 European tour, with a portrait of Betty Davis on the cover. The painting known as Zonked had been commis-sioned by the trumpet player but was never used at the time, due to their separa-tion. (The famous model and singer Betty Davis introduced her husband to the funk of Sly Stone and psychedelic rock of Hendrix. Miles Davis left her in 1969, at the time of his European tour, later saying he thought her, ‘too young and too wild’ for him).
The concert, Copenhagen Live, 1969 was performed by Miles Davis on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on soprano and tenor sax, Chick Corea on electric piano, Dave Holland on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums.
The double vinyl, with a limited edition release of 500 copies, will be sold ex-clusively with the book.

At a time when it was all about vinyl, the cover was more than just a simple illustration, it was a form of visual support, an object of meditation that listeners would gaze at relentlessly while playing their records. Mati Klarwein’s paintings, through their thematic wealth and visionary depth, fitted perfectly with the new values these musicians wanted to express and they subsequently became the artistic counterpoint to legendary albums like Bitches Brew, Abraxas and This is Madness by the Last Poets, the prophets of hip hop and rap.
Musicians continued to identify with Mati Klarwein’s paintings over the fol-lowing decades. Antoine de Beaupré, a passionate collector, has found more than 50 album covers coming from almost every genre, from classical to electro-jazz, all with the artist’s signature. Some used an existing painting; others were com-missioned especially such as the portraits of Buddy Miles, Greg Allman and the group Earth, Wind and Fire.
For the first time ever this book presents the album covers in their entirety, ac-companied by related texts, photos and documents with a preface by the writer Serge Bramly (Prix Interallié 2008), a life-long friend of the artist.Das Konzert (Copenhagen 1969, gab’s als DVD in der Bitches Brew Anniversary Box) scheint nur der limitierten Ausgabe beizuliegen, nicht der normalen Ausgabe.

Sony is preparing two new sets for release in the fall. The first is another installment in the Miles Davis Bootleg Series, to appear in September 2012 — this will be a three-CD, one-DVD set of live 1969 sets, including two concerts from Antibes on July 25 and July 26, plus pieces of two sets from Stockholm on November 5. The DVD will contain the November 7 performance at the Berlin Philharmonie. The second set is a reissue of the first eight Miles Davis Columbia LPs in mono — ‚Round About Midnight, Miles Ahead, Milestones, Jazz Track, Porgy and Bess, Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain, and Someday My Prince Will Come. The LPs will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl and will come in heavy facsimilies of the original covers. If this sounds vaguely familiar, you might be recalling Sony’s 2010 box, Bob Dylan: The Original Mono Recordings (Columbia 88697 76105-1), which did for Dylan what the planned set will do for Davis.--

Sehr schön. Ich hadere ja noch immer mit der Vinylbox von „Live in Europe“. 70,00 Euro sind kein Pappenstiel.
Aber noch wichtiger wäre ein Vinyl Re-Release der „Complete Plugged Nickel“-Aufnahmen. Oder hat jemand seine Mosaic-Box davon günstig abzugeben? Gerne auch ungünstig.

Sketches, Porgy und Kind in Mono? Brauche ich zum Glück nicht, denn ich finde die Stereo-Abmischungen sind hier ganz klar vorzuziehen.

Die Bootleg Vol. 2 hatten wir irgendwo schon – klasse, aber da wäre gleich ein zweites 3CD+DVD-Set angesagt, das Lost Quintet ist dermassen unterdokumentiert!

„Kind of Blue“ in Mono würde mich schon reizen. Bei den beiden anderen genügt mir aber auch die jeweilige Stereo-Abmischung.

Tja, Vinyl hat eben seinen Preis
Aber im Ernst: hol Dir die 1967er Box, es lohnt sich! Die Band live war anders drauf als im Studio (keine first takes über neue Stücke, sondern zupackend, oft telepathisch im dichten, faszinierenden Zusammenspiel), und selbst wenn Du die Plugged Nickel Box eines Tages haben wirst: da liegen ein paar Jahre dazwischen, während denen einiges lief!

@gypsy: Ich kenne beide Sets bereits und bin begeistert. Finde es auch weitaus erfreulicher, dass „Live in Europe“ als Vinybox erschien und nicht etwa die „Cellar Door Sessions“, obwohl die durchaus auch ihre Momente haben.
Die „Plugged Nickel“-Aufnahmen zähle ich zu den besten Miles Davis Sachen überhaupt. Aber zwischen 400,00 bis 700,00 Euro dafür hinblättern? Ich glaube, ich würds machen

Für meine CD-Box hatte ich damals – Hochpreisinsel Schweiz, als Schüler hatte ich keine Kreditkarte… – wohl auch über 200 CHF bezahlt. Aber bereut habe ich das nie, die Musik ist in der Tat grossartig!Ich hoffe, künftige Bootleg-Volumes werden auch Konzerte von 1973 und danach berücksichtigen, z.B. Jan 1975, da gäb’s einiges tolles Material, das ich gerne schön aufbereitet hören würde!

Mal innerhalb der knapp letzten 2 Wochen Bitches Brew gehört und damit vermutlich öfter als in den 18 Jahren zuvor, in denen ich das Album schon hatte. Hätte man mir das damals so gesagt, ich hätte ungläubig den Kopf geschüttelt. Aber das Album ist bei mir regelrecht explodiert. Es ist kaum fassbar, was in den 80 Minuten und dank der Complete Sessions darüber hinaus alles passiert. Urgewaltig und doch lässig, poly-rhythmisch vertrackt, ein ständiges Spiel zwischen Lauf und Leise, atmosphärisch dicht, wie man so schön sagt. Ich weiß, ich sage nichts neues, aber meine Begeisterung ist gerade grenzenlos.

Merci, Clau. Ich werde auf kurz oder lang nicht drumherum kommen. Die „Music on Vinyl“-Editionen sind ja meistens superb.

Ich bilde mir ein, einmal gelesen zu haben, dass irgendjemand (eine Frau?) meinte, Miles Davis wäre gut, aber er sollte doch singen – oder so ähnlich. Ich finde das nicht mehr.
Kennt vielleicht jemand von euch eine solche Aussage?--
Ich kenne nur die Episode der Frau, die Miles an einem Anlass zu Ehren von Ray Charles 1987 im weissen Haus gefragt hat, was er denn getan habe, damit ihm die Ehre der Einladung zugekommen sei. Seine Antwort: „I’ve changed music four or five times. What have you done of any importance other than be white?“ (Das steht so anscheinend auf S. 398 der Autobiographie, via wikiquote – ist lange her, dass ich das Buch in den Händen hatte).
Das mit dem Singen ist mir neu, aber ich bin sicher es gibt viele dumme Leute, die entsprechend dumme Gedanken tätigen.
