– grässliches Cover in der Tat, aber dafür scheint Iyer (auch dank des covermässig ziemlich üblen ACT-Labels) ein gutes Händchen zu haben … die McPhee ist klasse! Vermutlich mag ich „Trinity“, die erste von den CJRs, die ich kannte, noch eine Spur besser, aber das ist alles grossartige Musik!--

Heute mal wieder in der Schleife das Titelstück:

Nachdem ich vorgestern die gerade gekaufte CD hörte, grub ich diese hier aus … sehr, sehr schöne Musik! Schade, dass Harrell nicht sehr viel besser bekannt ist, Obertröte Wynton und diverse in die Jahre gekommene junge Löwen stehen ihm vor dem Licht – und seine eigene Beschaffenheit hilft wohl kaum. Aber an den guten Tagen – einer davon ist hier dokumentiert – überstrahlt seine Musik am Ende alles. Sein „Everything Happens to Me“ ist herzzerreissend schön.
Und dank der Wayback-Machine konnte ich gerade feststellen, wann ich Harrell zum ersten Mal live gesehen habe, mit einer ganz ähnlichen Band (wenn ich nicht irre: Jimmy Greene, Xavier Davis, Ugonna Okegwo, am Schlagzeug ein over-powernder Ralph Peterson, und drei weitere Bläser, die ich aber nicht mehr benennen kann).

Da war er mittelprächtig drauf, das Schweizer Radio strahlte denn auch nur zwanzig Minuten oder so davon aus (DRS 2 wenigstens, kann sein, dass RSR oder RSI längere Mitchnitte sendeten). Ich hörte ihn dann 2006 noch einmal, im kleinen Club, auch das ein Abend, der oft verschattet war, aber ein paar ganz grossartige Momente mit sich brachte, v.a. „Darn That Dream“, die zweitletzte Nummer im zweiten und letzten Set, gespielt im Duo von Harrell mit dem Bassisten Ugonna Okegwo. Die Band bestand damals neben den beiden aus Wayne Escofferey (ts), Danny Grissett (p) und Jonathan Blake (d).--

wir mir dieses jahrhundertalbum bisher durch die lappen gehen konnte, ist mir völlig unklar. interessant, wie sehr sich diese stimme von der tonfärbung her nina simone annähern kann.

Hol Dir unbedingt auch „Occasional Rain“ und „The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier“. Letzteres ist die Essenz, die pure Essenz, Musik von unheimlicher Dichte. Die drei sind ziemlich unterschiedlich, aber auf seine eigene Art ist jedes unglaublich gut!
Selber, vorhin unterwegs die 1944er Cootie Williams-Sessions mit Bud Powell am Klavier, sowie Lockjaw am Tenor dem eigentlichen Star der Band, Eddie „Cleanhead“ Vinson ( … I want you to squeeze me and tease me / Hold me until my face turns cherry red … ) am Altsaxophon und Gesang. Sehr schöne Musik, von Powell ist vergleichsweise wenig zu hören, aber das eine oder andere Mal lässt er durchaus aufhorchen.
Gerade zu Ende gehört (ich war nochmal in diesem CD-Laden, der demnächst schliesst und habe eine Tüte voller Sachen heimgeschleppt, darunter auch diese):
