Von den Gastsaxophonisten nahm ich irgendwie nicht viel wahr, das sind einfach zwei kurze Soli, die nicht stören aber im Ganzen, so mein erster Eindruck, keine grosse Rolle spielen. Wichtiger aber: Coltrane ist in grossartiger Form, strahlt eine beeindruckende Ruhe aus, die dann von Sanders‘ wilden Ausbrüchen kontrastiert wird. Der Gesang von Coltrane … kann man irgendwie nicht in Worte fassen. Das Drum-Solo ist in der grossartig, fand ich auch! (Von Oscar Peterson, mit oder ohne LSD, habe ich hingegen nichts gehört – das kommt mir wie die blöde über-hip-Schreibe von manchen Jazzkritikern rein.)
Ich war jedenfalls gestern abend auch völlig euphorisiert, bin momentan einfach nciht in der Lage, sowas auszudrücken …

Gestern lief schon CD 4 der „Duke Box“ von Storyville mit Aufnahmen von 1943, jetzt das Carnegie Hall-Konzert vom Dezember 1943, das auf CDs 5 und 6 zu finden ist (leider ohne Betty Roché – anscheinend war sie krank).

Vol. 5 der phantastischen World Transcriptions dann morgen … zur Nacht noch eine kleine Combo mit den drei Solisten Clark Terry (flh), Jimmy Hamilton (cl), Paul Gonsalves (ts), einem Posaunen-Chor aka „pep section“ (Quentin Jackson, John Sanders, Britt Woodman) und der Rhythmusgruppe (Ellington, Jimmy Woode, Sam Woodyard). Eine Art Anknüpfung an die vielen Small Group-Sessions der Dreissiger, bloss gibt es diesmal (1958) vornehmlich Standards zu hören: vom „St. Louis Blues“ und „Body and Soul“ über „Perdido“, „Take the ‚A‘-Train“ und Lionel Hamptons „Midnight Sun“ bis zu „Early Autumn“.
