soulpope“You and the Night and The Music“ ist aus meiner Sicht (und ich bin bekanntlich ein großer Waldron Freund) ziemlich verzichtbar, die Waldronsche Dekonstruktion von „Suicide is Painless“ bzw „Beat It“ auf „Breaking New Ground“ find ich jedoch (er)hörenswert……im Olymp seines Schaffens stehen beide Platten sicher nicht….aus der Troika dieser Aufnahmesessionsfür Baybridge fand ich „Waldron Plays Satie“ am interessantesten…
Das Satie-Stück ist auf „Breaking New Ground“ neben „Suicide Is Painless“ auf jeden Fall ganz eindeutig das beste. Aber ja, alle drei sind nicht wahnsinnig gut, aber nach „Ground“ empfand ich „You and the Night“ als äusserst erbaulich. Ich mag zudem ein paar der enthaltenen Stücke sehr gerne (darunter das Titelstück), daher ist die Scheibe für mich doch deutlich besser als „Ground“, die ziemlich nah an ein Grounding kommt, wenn ich mal etwas kalauern darf.

Miles Davis – Panthalassa: The Music of Miles Davis 1969-1974
Reconstruction & Mix Translation by Bill Laswell (1998)Die Platte ist mir irgendwie in die musikalische Speisefolge gerutscht, zwischen Elektronica und Rock und irgendwie passt das dann auch. Klingt jedenfalls mehr nach elektronischer Musik der 90er als nach Jazz. Dabei hat Bill Laswell gar nicht mal so viel an den Originalen verändert. Eigentlich hat er sie nur anders geschnitten. So eine Art short version von Miles‘ Elektrophase. Schöne Platte, die aber ein besseres Cover verdient hätte.

Jimmy Smiths Midnight Special steht bei mir auch im Regal. Könnte ich mal wieder auflegen. Ich mag ja auch Stanley Turrentine und Kenny Burrell sehr gerne hören. Von Baby Face Wilette kenne ich nur das Titelstück des obigen Albums von einer Compilation. Wie ist den das Album?
BFW war offenbar eine etwas obskure Gestalt, die nur sehr wenig aufgenommen hat und dann irgendwo verschollen ist, oder?

„Chicken Shack“ finde ich deutlich besser als „Midnight Special“.

Wie jetzt? Aller Zeiten? Face To Face oder Chicken Shack? Es gibt außer Face To Face ja noch ein anderes Album von Baby Face für Blue Note, was wohl auch sehr gut ist. Wieso sind diese Alben so obskur?
Ist der Niveauunterschied von Chicken Shack und Midnight Special wirklich so bedeutend? Gleiche Besetzung, gleich Aufnahmesession, unmittelbar nacheinander veröffentlicht …

Die recht deutliche Differenz liegt wohl am Repertoire, die Stücke auf „Midnight Special“ bieten nicht den Freiraum des Titelstückes und „Messy Bessie“.

Stimmt, das muss auch noch in die Liste, ja!
„Groovin‘ at Smalls“ find ich unendlich faszinierend, ein Album, das vor Einfällen fast platzt … das ist nach den noch etwas verhaltenen Anfängen die echte Stunde null der modernen Orgel.
