Ja, hübsch in der Tat! Etwas glatt produziert (und gespielt) wie so vieles im Mainstream Jazz seit den Neunzigern, aber auch besser als vieles aus derselben Ecke.

absolut richtig (beides). ich mag aber seinen trompetenton sehr und „regret (no more)“ ist ein wahnsinnig schönes stück.

Ist zu hoffen, dass da noch einiges kommt — und dass er nicht stärker in die toughe New Yorker Ecke abdriftet und das Lyrische beibehalten kann!

Lin Halliday. Okay. He was a guy who … He was a very sweet-natured person, a very gentle person. Also kind of a timid person. Got messed up in drugs during the 1950s, 1960s. Had tremendous talent and just screwed up every opportunity. He’s kind of famous or infamous in the annals of jazz history for being THAT guy, but to the people who knew him in Chicago he was a very dear friend. Das komplette Interview mit Brad Goode, das Danny Meyer geführt und auf seine Seite gestellt hat, ist grossartig, redbeans hatte es erwähnt, mittlerweile habe ich es zu Ende gelesen und es gibt wenig so treffende Kommentare und Analysen zu Eddie Harris und Von Freeman wie die von Brad Goode. Zudem gibt es eine Menge an Stories und Episoden über Jodie Christian, Red Rodney, Barrett Deems, Chris Potter und einige andere. (Was wohl mit den Rosie Clooney Teilen geschehen ist? Hat Georg – un caffè con Chicago? – Einspruch erhoben?)

Ohne Musik ist alles Leben ein Irrtum.Die Brille ist hart … aber ein paar Töne in das Album hinein und alle Bedenken sind verflogen!
Echt jetzt, das ist ein kleiner underground Tip – nicht, dass es jemanden wirklich interessieren wird, aber das ist ein wunderbares Album! Altmodischer Bebop von einem, der schon lange mit dabei war (*1929, er ist noch, keine Ahnung, ober noch spielt) und hier von drei Musikern begleitet wird, die auch schon länger im Geschäft waren, Frank Strazzeri (p), Andy Simpkins (b) und Nick Martinis (d). Die Aufnahme entstand 1992 in Vic Feldmans Studio und das Cover-Photo hat William Claxton gemacht (für die Brille kann er nix ;-))
Jazz bassist Charles Mingus dropped in on a Gil Fuller recording session in L.A. one day in the mid-1960s and saw several familiar faces. There was featured guest Dizzy Gillespie, of course, as well as alto saxophonist Buddy Collette, one of the best studio men on the scene.
Collette was taking a solo on the tune that Fuller and his musicians were recording when Mingus walked in. Then so did the sax player next to him, a man Mingus had never seen before.
Mingus looked at the two sax players and then spoke to Collette: “Hey, Buddy, don’t let that Chinaman out-blow you, man. Blow that horn!”
The “Chinaman” was Gabe Baltazar.
“I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry,” Baltazar said when he shared the story with me several weeks ago during a photo shoot at the Hawai’i State Art Museum.
“I used to play the New York style, see, and Buddy plays the West Coast style, very smooth, like Paul Desmond and all that. I had so much respect for the guy, (he was) a marvelous player. (When Mingus said that) … I said (to myself) ‘It must be a compliment from Charlie Mingus.”
