The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Alice Coltrane has died of respiratory failure. She was 69.

Jazz World Mourns Michael Brecker and Alice Coltrane

It has been a sad weekend for the jazz world with the death of two prominent musicians. Alice Coltrane and Michael Brecker both died this weekend.
Born Alice McLeod in 1937, she met and married John Coltrane, credited as the creator of avant-garde music. Alice played with John’s band until his death in 1967.
Her instruments of choice were piano, harp and Wurlitzer organ.
Alice’s most recent albums were recorded for the Verve label.
Michael Brecker had been suffering from the pre-leukemic disease MDS. He was diagnosed in 2005. In May 2006, he underwent an experimental stem cell operation that did not go as well as hoped. Doctor’s had been searching for a suitable bone marrow match for Brecker over the past year but were unable to find the right match.
Born in Philadelphia in 1949, Brecker recorded his own albums with his bands Horace Silver and the Brecker Brothers (with brother Randy).
He was also a well-known session musican appearing on albums by Paul Simon, James Taylor and Yoko Ono.

Alice Coltrane ist tot
Sie begann als Bebop-Pianistin, brillierte an der Seite ihres Ehemanns John Coltrane und spielte vor zwei Jahren ein letztes furioses Album ein: In Alice Coltranes Leben spiegelten sich die Innovationen des Jazz.
Lange Jahre war ihr Publikum äußerst begrenzt: Wer Kompositionen von Alice Coltrane hören wollte, musste nach Woodland Hills, Kalifornien, und dort ins Vedantic Center zum Studium der östlichen Religionen. Dort kursierten Audiokassetten von Turya Sagittinanda, wie sich die Musikerin nannte, akustische Hilfen für die Meditation.
2004 spielte sie, eine der letzten Ikonen das amerikanischen Free Jazz, dann noch einmal eine Platte ein: „Translinear Light“ heißt das Album, ein meisterlicher Schulterschluss der Generationen und mit den Coltrane-Söhnen Ravi (Tenorsaxophon) und Oran (Altsaxofon) hervorragend besetzt.
Das Vedantic Center gründete sie 1975, da blickte sie bereits auf eine fulminante Karriere im Jazz und die eigene Institutionalisierung zurück. Die begann, als sie 1963 den Tenorsaxofonisten John Coltrane kennen lernte. Aus Alice McLeod, einer exzellenten Bepop-Pianistin (das Klavierspiel lernte sie in ihrem Geburtsort Detroit in der Kirche), wurde Alice Coltrane, die Ehefrau und musikalische Begleiterin des Saxofon-Genies John Coltrane.
Gemeinsam mit dem Saxofonisten Pharoah Sanders, dem Drummer Rashied Ali und Jimmy Garrison am Bass kreierte die Pianistin den Sound der letzten, großen Schaffensphase von John Coltrane. Das Album „Ascension“, einer der Meilensteine des Free Jazz, wäre ohne sie ebenso wenig möglich gewesen wie „Kulu Se Mama“ und „Om“, die hymnischen Spätwerke Coltranes.
Als John Coltrane, nur zwei Jahre nach der Hochzeit 1967 starb, wurde Alice zur Nachlassverwalterin ihres Mannes. Sein Programm eines sich von Formkonventionen radikal befreienden Jazz führte sie in insgesamt elf Solo-Alben weiter aus. Für ihre ozeanisch-spirituellen Klangwelten nutzte sie neben dem Klavier zunehmend auch die Harfe, und als sie nach einer Indienreise zum Hinduismus konvertierte, kamen Sitar und Tamboura hinzu.
In ihrer Rolle als Coltrane-Erbin war die Musikerin umstritten: Die Frauenbewegung feierte sie als genuin weibliche Stilistin des Jazz, während die Anhänger John Coltranes sie als Kitschistin schmähten. Spätestens als sie die unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen des letzten Coltrane-Quintetts als Remixe herausbrachte, wurde sie zum Hassobjekt der Coltrane-Gemeinde.
„Translinear Light“ hingegen ließ sie in einem anderen, differenzierten Licht erscheinen: als große Innovatorin, die mit virtuoser Technik und improvisatorischem Wagemut den Free Jazz noch einmal als Meilenstein der populären Musikgeschichte in Erinnerung rief.
Alice Coltranes Spiel wird weiter Anregung und Provokation bleiben, auch wenn die Künstlerin gestorben ist, am vergangenen Dienstag, im Alter von 69 Jahren an einem Lungenversagen in Los Angeles.

Doyle Holly, the man responsible for the thumping bass beat of Buck Owens‘ backup band, the Buckaroos, during their creative apex died Saturday Jan. 13 in Nashville of prostate cancer at the age of 70. Born Doyle Floyd Hendricks on June 30, 1936 in Perkins, Okla., Holly moved to Bakersfield and worked the Kern County oil fields by day, then played the city’s booming honky tonks by night.
Holly assumed the bass duties in the Buckaroos in 1963 when the band’s previous bassist, Merle Haggard, decided to pursue a solo career. Holly remained with the band through 1971, an extremely fertile period that saw Owens and the Buckaroos—who also included guitarist Don Rich, steel guitar player Don Brumley and drummer Willie Cantu—top the country charts year after year.
As Holly put it recently, „Everybody was in the right place at the right time.“ Owens‘ oldest son, who recorded successfully under the name Buddy Alan, notes that the Bakersfield Sound the Buckaroos created was just loud and raunchy enough to be considered „country rock ’n‘ roll“ and was a lively alternative to the more traditional sounds coming from Nashville at the time.
Holly gained enough national exposure on Owens‘ television series „Hee Haw“ to quit the band and begin a successful solo career that saw him release a pair of Top 20 hits of his own. But he left the recording business to open a musical instrument shop in suburban Nashville where he remained until reuniting with the surviving Buckaroos (Don Rich was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1974) to record a bluegrass album called Together Again.
