Die Nummer wäre auch ohne das Gimmick prima gewesen, aber der Klang des Saxophons wurde – so habe ich das jedenfalls empfunden – etwas farbiger.
Der Sound verliert halt auch an Konturen … und an Variantenreichtum, den man sonst viel stärker auskosten kann, als wenn das alles verstärkt wird (was ja auch ein Grund ist, keine Pick-Ups zu verwenden sondern bei Bass oder Gitarre ein Mikrophon vor den Verstärker zu stellen (oder beim Kontrabass auch einfach ein „normales“ Mikrophon vor dem Bass zu platzieren) … aber in den späten Sechzigern und Siebzigern wurde munter mit sowas experimentiert, und bei Harris macht mir das schon sehr viel Spass (während z.B. die Aufnahmen, die Sonny Sitt – man ging halt mit dem Trend, ob er es war oder der Produzent, der das entschied? – mit Varitone ziemlich öde ist). Aber bei Harris ist eh immer ein spielerisches Element dabei – auch etwas, was die Jazz-Orthodoxie oft nicht schätzt … er spielte z.B. auch eine Trompete mit Saxophon-Mundstück, war ein guter Pianist, sang gerne, machte lange Ansagen fast wie ein Stand-Up-Comedian und nahm sich dabei oft selbst nicht so ernst. Den Kunstbeflissenen passte das nie so ganz ins Bild, egal ob bei Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Dizzy Gillespie, Roland Kirk oder Eddie Harris.
