Anyone looking for a way to prolong the buzz from a long weekend would do well to turn up Sugar Stems’ “The One,” the latest single from the Milwaukee band’s second record for the unimpeachable Dirtnap Records, Only Come Out At Night. A sterling slice of bright-as-fireworks power-pop, the song situates frontwoman Betsy Heibler’s strawberry-sweet vocals inside a tangle of guitars, recalling both prime Bangles as well as the Soft Boys at their most achingly melodic.
