recorded live at Radio Studio Zürich March 31, 1978 and April 8, 1978 and January 19, 1980

As of the late sixties thru the mid-eighties many international Jazz musicians from around the world passed through at the radio in Zurich, to perform concerts, backed by the Swiss Jazz Live Trio and recorded by Swiss Radio. Here is another historic document which shows what was happening during that particular period in Switzerland.
Volume 28 features Kenneth (Kenny) Wheeler, Canadian, born Jan.14th 1930 at Toronto and raised in St. Catharines. He studied later at the Toronto conservatory. With Britain as a base, he became one of Europe’s most formidable and in-demand trumpeters, enjoying an international reputation.
Alan Skidmore, one of the top musicians from the UK, is the tenor saxophonist on tracks 3 to six. His relation to Switzerland stems from various participations with the George Gruntz Big Band.

A magnificent recording of Stan Getz performed at the Kongresshaus Zurich on April 8, 1960. This recording is a real gem! As of tomorrow this CD can also be purchased in Europe via our online-shop.

TCB 02292 Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series – Volume 29
Stan Getz Quartet – live at the Kongresshaus, Zurich, April 8, 1960

Stan Getz, tenorsaxophone
Jan Johansson, piano
Ray Brown, bass
Ed Thigpen, drums

Back in 1960 the great promoter of Jazz Norman Granz organized another Jazz At The Philharmonic (JATP) concert tour through Europe with the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Stan Getz Quartet and the Miles Davis Quintet. On April 8, 1960 these giants of Jazz gave a memorable concert at the Kongresshaus in Zurich. This Volume (29) contains the concert of the Stan Getz Quartet. This concert recording will probably rank as one of the greatest recordings by Stan Getz. Sit back and just listen and let yourself be carried away. A real discovery is pianist Jan Johansson from Sweden whom Getz met while living in Scandinavian countries late fifties/early sixties. On this tour, Stan Getz fired his drummer and bassplayer and made a deal with Oscar Peterson, to use Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen for the rest of the tour. To our knowledge this is the only recording with this line-up – an absolute musical gem.

The two other concerts of the same evening (Oscar Peterson TCB 02302 – released as of July / Miles Davis TCB 02312 – released as of August) will follow this CD shortly. An indepth monographie about this Zurich concert of these 3 giants will be published in 2013 by Edition Olms and written by Olivier Senn of the University Lucerne, Jazz department.

The second CD of the JATP concert at Zurich of April 8, 1960 (after the first ‚Stan Getz Quartet‘ last month) is out now. Below are the details.

TCB 02302 Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series Volume 30
Oscar Peterson Trio

Oscar Peterson, piano
Ray Brown, bass
Ed Thigpen, drums

Back in 1960 the great promoter of Jazz Norman Granz organized another Jazz At The Philharmonic (JATP) concert tour through Europe with the Oscar Peterson Trio, the Stan Getz Quartet and the Miles Davis Quintet. On April 8, 1960 these giants of Jazz gave a memorable concert at the Kongresshaus in Zurich. This Volume (30) contains the concert of the Oscar Peterson Trio. This was the peak time of this trio and the Zurich concert shows this clearly. Oscar is in great shape and the rhythm section the best there was. Also the recording/sound quality is extraordinary considering the year it was recorded and the fact that it was a live recording down to 2 track.
