In der Dezember-Ausgabe von Wire schreibt Joe McPhee in der Rubrik „The Inner Sleeve“ gleich selbst über „Nation Time“. Natürlich geht es nebenbei auch um die Box, die gerade erschienen ist: „With the release of the complete Nation Time sessions, the story will almost be fully told.“ Ein schöner kleiner Text, irgendwo zwischen losen Gedanken, andauerndem Protest („Yeah, and free Pussy Riot now! Cut the shit!“), politischem Manifest („Freedom is a work in progress needing constant attention … forever.“) und – wie mir scheint durchaus zufriedenem – Blick zurück auf ein gelungenes eigenes Werk aus frühen Tagen, das auch covertechnisch sehr stark ist: „An African-American man – me – is standing in the centre of the photo, looking not unlike John Shaft or Linc from the TV series of the time, Mod Squad, but in surroundings which could be rustic, rural America. Instead of a machine gun or assault rifle, the weapon of choice is a tenor saxophone. There is no overt Black Power salute as in the 1968 Olympics protest, but it stands as an enduring protest nonetheless.“ (Die Lokalität, in der das Bild aufgenommen wurde, war Innisfree, ein Zen-Garten in der Nähe von Millbrook, NY).
