Bethlehem Records legacy is a lengthy discography that freshly and ambitiously captures and preserves an era of music, including West Coast Cool Jazz and East Coast Bop. Bethlehem Records roster of artists includes Nina Simone, Carmen McRae, Chris Connor, Mel Torme, Dexter Gordon, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, and Duke Ellington. For some of these iconic artists, the Bethlehem recordings represent their classic debuts, and still for others, their greatest recorded work to date.
Each track has been restored from the original analog sound recording & digitally remastered by audio engineer John Sigmon to meet the highest level of clarity and quality standards. For the first time in decades, each of the titles will be available in their original configuration in LP, CD and digital formats.

Each release includes all original artwork, repackaged and designed by Chris Cyran. Da sind ein paar sehr schöne Dinge dabei, allerdings wohl mal wieder das depperte Ohne-Bonustracks-Konzept, was z.B. bei Zoot Sims heisst, dass eine ganze Menge toller Alternate Takes, die auf dem letzten US-Reissue zu finden waren, wieder fehlen wird.
Neben den offensichtlichsten Alben sind auch ein paar weniger bekannte Dinge dabei, immerhin, etwa eines von zwei Alben von Helen Carr, einer sehr guten Sängerin (das letzte Reissue enthielt beide Alben und damit ihren ganzen Output). Das Kirk-Album ist sein erstes und gewiss eins der unwichtigsten – es dauerte danach vier Jahre, bis er wieder aufnahm (das zweite für Argo war dann allerdings spitze!), Nina Simone gehört natürlich in jede Sammlung und auch die Booker Little-Scheibe ist klasse!
Die McGhee, Ervin, Sims, Pettiford, Gordon, Connor, Waldron, Hartman, Byrd/Adams, Coltrane, Blakey und Tormé Alben sind alle auch von Interesse, aber wirklich essentiell sind sie vermutlich alle nicht. Bei Mingus handelt es sich um Material, das auch auf Period erschienen ist, keine Ahnung, wie es dazu kam. Die essentielle Scheibe wäre da natürlich „East Coasting“.
Sehr seltsam dann die Porgy & Bess … das scheint eine von zwei Best-Of-Auskopplungen aus der grossen Produktion zu sein, die soweit ich weiss das Ende des Labels besiegelte. Auch davon (also von der kompletten Aufnahme) gab es schon wenigstens zwei CD-Ausgaben.
Die Alben von Levey, Scott, Troup und Castle kenne ich nicht – die Levey ist auf jeden Fall von Interesse!
Auch die Lockjaw kenne ich nicht – gerade nachgeschaut, das ist eine Compilation mit sechs Tracks, die er mit Shirley Scott an der Orgel für King eingespielt hat – keine Ahnung, wie die zu Bethlehem kamen (James Brown hat auch mal ein paar Titel für Bethlehem eingespielt, vielleicht gab’s da irgendeine Connection).
Eine insgesamt etwas seltsame Wahl – nicht die besten, nicht die rarsten, einfach mal so ein bisschen was zusammengestellt.
