Mit knapp 3 Monaten Verspätung wird das Debut von Aaron Bruno (Under the Influence of Giants) am 13. Juni nun auch endlich offiziell in Deutschland erscheinen. Auf der offiziellen Homepage kann man das komplette Album schon seit ein paar Wochen im Stream hören und so ganz ohne Thread wollte ich das Album dann auch nicht vorbeiziehen lassen. Dem ein oder anderen dürfte die exzellente Radiosingle ‚Sail‘ schon geläufig sein und auch die restlichen Songs brauchen sich nicht verstecken. Da ich meine Höreindrücke nur schwer in Worte fassen kann, verweise ich hier mal auf die nachfolgende Kritik; oder ihr bildet euch einfach eure eigene Meinung und hört den Stream. Es lohnt sich.
It’s been nearly a year since the California-based artist Aaron Bruno (aka AWOLNATION) graced his listeners with an impressive five-song debut EP. Recently, I was fortunate enough to receive a review copy of his forthcoming full-length album, Megalithic Symphony, before the album officially hits store shelves on March 15. Megalithic Symphony features three of the five songs included on the EP, including his smash radio hit “Sail,” as well as “Burn It Down,” and another favorite of ours, “Guilty Filthy Soul.”
After a few listens through, it was easy to tell that Aaron is definitely headed in the right direction. The entire album is comprised of the tough, hard, and passionate music that AWOLNATION vows to provide. If you enjoyed the experimental sound of “Sail,” you are sure to appreciate the genre-blending nature of the entire album. Aaron’s incorporation of an abundance of vocal variety adds flavor to each track. Utilizing vocal distortion, rapping, shouting, and singing constantly switches things up and ensures that the listener will not grow tired of the album anytime soon.
The album effectively combines sounds from a number of genres, but never strays too far in any one direction. Aaron blends soul, electronica, rock, and hip-hop into a single, fascinating collection. This desire to branch into each of these genres seems to be summed up in the final track, “Knight Of Shame”. Clocking in at nearly twelve minutes, “Knights of Shame” transitions through each of Awol’s musical influences while blending the superb production that can be heard throughout the entire album.
Another stand-out track, “All I Need” slows things down a bit and provides us with a little hint of gospel, a nice change up from the rest of the album. Also, “Wake Up,” where Aaron jumps back and forth between his usual tough-sounding lyrics and a more pop-like chorus, makes for an impressive track.
Overall, Megalithic Symphony is an extremely impressive debut LP and a breath of fresh air for a music scene in which many artists get tied down to a single sound. The thing that stands out most in each song, and seems to tie the album together, is the sense of passion in the music (something that is often missing). WerbungGrandioses Album. Sicherlich bei mir eines der besten aus 2011. Und nahezu überhaupt nicht einzuordnen. Zumindest ich fragte mich beim Hören oftmals verwundert, ob das nun immer noch die gleiche Band ist, was den Zugang nicht einfacher machte, aber dafür nachhaltiger wirkte.
Vom Einstieg mit härteren Gitarren und fast schon hardcore/emoesquen Gesang über höchst eingängigen Elektropop und Hip Hop, bis zu ruhigeren Tönen ist nahezu alles vertreten, gerne, wie im 14 minütigen Abschluss-Track, auch mal in einem Stück.
Man muss sich drauf einlassen, aber dann sollte es eigentlich, sowohl Freunden z.B. der Pet Shop Boys, als auch Anhängern der härteren Töne gefallen können. Selten habe ich eine so gute funktionierende Symbiose gehört.
Die Platte kommt als Doppel-LP mit DL-Gutschein und Gatefold-Cover mit sehr schönem Prägedruck (der das Covermotiv leider dennoch nicht wirklich besser macht).**** – ****1/2

Mein Einstieg war „Sail“, klasse Nummer nach wie vor. Umso enttäuschter war ich dann vom Album, das dem hohen Standard von „Sail“ in keinster Weise gerecht wird. Ich halte diese Symbiose aus Kraut & Rüben für unerträglich, die Platte klingt wie eine BRAVO Hits-Compilation. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass dieser Stilmix möglicherweise live ganz gut funktioniert und die Partyfraktion gut bedient, mit Kopfhörern im trauten Heim dann aber leider absolut verzichtbar.
