Robert Scott’s list of music projects over the years reads like a who’s who of alternative New Zealand music.
From his role as bass-player, song-writer and non-Kilgour in legendary New Zealand noisy jangle-pop pioneers The Clean and as singer, guitarist and songwriter in The Bats, he also helmed the acclaimed Magick Heads, not to mention fronting a bewildering variety of less well-known groups from the long running Electric Blood to the short-lived Gina Rocco & the Rockettes (http://www.powertoolrecords.co.nz/ginarocco.htm)
In turn he has contributed to numerous other Flying Nun groups, while drawing and painting the cover art for many memorable Flying Nun album sleeves. Therefore it seems fitting that his latest solo alum, Ends Run Together, has found its way onto the new Flying Nun Records.
It’s hardly surprising that Robert has found little time to pursue many solo recordings. But songs – lovely, glorious, subtle, mysterious, sad, questioning and perfect songs – pour out of Robert Scott constantly, collected in exercise books and on cassette tapes over the years. Unbelievably, some of those brilliant songs don’t find homes on albums by The Clean or The Bats and Ends Run Together, his third solo album, is a collection of those songs Robert wants the world to hear.
The result is an outstanding album of 13 engaging songs, as likely to appeal to any fan of great alternative pop as much as to those already familiar with his past projects. With Dale Cotton on the production reins, Robert has surrounded himself with a talented community of musicians from his Dunedin home, including fellow Clean-er David Kilgour and even Lesley Paris (Look Blue, Go Purple) has been coaxed back onto the drumkit for some of the songs.
Jam-packed full of pop hooks and intelligent arrangements, Ends Run Together will be released in New Zealand on Flying Nun Records and Australia on Mistletone in September.
Indeed, Flying Nun manager Roger Shepherd said first single; „‘Daylight’ – a driving kraut-post-rock styled masterpiece featuring Lesley Paris on drums – is too good, not to give away”. So we are, and you can grab the free download from here:
