When the lyrics started coming in, this record sounded very emotional and personal, and also in the sense of the way we treated the songs. We cover a fair amount of ground. There are some loud things, then there are some things that are beautiful and quiet. It feels like the heart of the record is „Oh My Heart“ and „Blue“, the one we did with Patti {Smith}. She came in and it just so happened that it was the same day that either her friend had passed away or it was his memorial. She heard the track, said, „Let me go with it“ then went in and did her part in one pass. It was so emotional and vivid and completely of the moment.
Then Peaches came in and nailed ‚Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter“ in a small part of the evening. I didn’t realise she’s such a great singer. Lenny Kaye plays on that, too. And Eddie Vedder sings on a choral part of „It Happened Today“, which is not quite as rock as people might expect.
