nail751971 war das Jahr eines bedeutsamen Wandels. Zu Beginn des Jahres wie auf Three From The Vault klingt die Band noch sehr wie 1970, obwohl der Sound zunehmend rockiger wird. Das setzt sich im Lauf des Jahres fort bis die Band im Herbst (Road Trips, Vol. 3, No. 2: Austin, 11/15/71) fast wie eine Bar-Rock-Band klingt. Die Phase dauert nicht lang, aber ich finde sie sehr interessant.
Hab gerade was dazu zufällig in den Compendiums gefunden (beim Old Renaissance Fairground Artikel, Garcia wird am Schluss zitiert):
„The year 1970 brougt the start of an important new era- With greater emphasis given to singing well and a return in part to acustic American folk music, the Dead were beginning to show signs not only of focus and maturity but of an awareness of nuance…. Musically speaking the year, 1971 seemed to be contractive by comparison. I remember a Garcia quote about Skull and Roses,…, in which he said that the Dead were trying to achive a super tight shoot’em up BAR BAND sound.“ (Compendium 1, S.403)
Also dieses Fehler der Nuancen (daher auch kursiv im Original), der Text nennt als eine der wichtigsten Nuance die Stille („the most powerful sound is silence“) charakterisiert den 71 Sound als Bar Band, bei einer Bar Band wäre Stille natürlich fehl am Platz.
Dann wird direkt übergeleitet zu 1972:
„As 1972 rolled around, however, the Dead’s music took a dramatic shift up in power, focus and intensity.“
