Wo ich das mit Dolphy her habe, weiss ich nicht mehr, wirklich vorstellen kann ich ihn mir an Miles‘ Seite aber auch nicht.
vielleicht aus brodys klugem kommentar zur davis‘ dolphy-bashing. tony williams hatte dolphy als saxofonisten im miles-quintett vorgeschlagen, nachdem er mit ihm OUT TO LUNCH aufgenommen hatte. übrigens auch archie shepp (das finde ich noch undenkbarer). miles hat beide abgelehnt und es dann – wie wir wissen – kurz mit sam rivers versucht. ich kann mir eigenartigerweise dolphy & miles ziemlich gut vorstellen.
There’s a lot more to Davis’s vastly complex aesthetic psychology and artistic transformations and conflicts. It’s enough to note that he knew he needed something from Dolphy and Taylor—and that he needed it more than they needed, at that point, anything from him—and that this would have sufficed to arouse the lion’s wrath and provoke him to a mighty artistic challenge.
