The Jam, unaided by me, go on to become one of the UK’s most popular bands and 30 years on from what is sometimes called Punk’s Year Zero, with Strummer dead, Lydon in exile and Elvis Costello fatally marginalised, it’s Paul Weller – alone of punk’s original angry young men – who is still making music with the vitality of his youth, his iconic status confirmed by the esteem in which he is widely held.
