The Modfather on his latest lifetime award
30 June 07 – Paul Weller has given 6 Music an exclusive interview after picking up the Silver Clef lifetime achievement award.

It follows the Modfather’s 2006 Outstanding contribution honour at the Brit awards. But when 6 Music caught up with him, Weller was initially unsure what it all means.

„I really don’t know,“ he said. „It just means I’m getting old, that’s what it means.“

After a run of hits stretching over 30 years with The Jam, The Style Council and as a solo artist, we asked Weller what he regards as his biggest achievement.

„Just to make music,“ he said. „Making my first record was an achievement. Still making records after all these years is an achievement for me. I never expected to still be making music at my age. Every day’s an achievement.“

Weller’s now making music with a Britpop legend – former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon. The pair have recorded a song together called This Old Town for the Regal Singles Club and it’s released as a download on 2 July followed by a vinyl release on 30 July with two additional songs by each of them.

The Modfather had a hit with his last studio album, As Is Now, in 2005, and the last year’s live album Catch-Flame! made the top 20. Now Weller says he’s got a big birthday in mind as he thinks about new material.

He said: „Ideally I’d like to put a double album out next year, before I get to 50. That’s my little gameplan.“

Weller also explained why – with all those Jam songs to draw upon – he focuses on his solo material at live shows with a just a couple of old songs thrown in. At Glastonbury last week, he played three songs by The Jam including Town Called Malice.

He said: „I only play the songs that I relate to. I like playing what’s contemporary.“

Weller also revealed that he plans to do an acoustic tour with guitarist Steve Cradock later in the year, and says he will then take a break before working on new material.
