Album Sales Awards:
Record Year For UK Independent Artists
– 2006 Revealed As Benchmark Year
– To Be Followed By Key Releases In 07
A newly completed analysis by AIM (the Association of Independent Music) of
BPI certified sales awards for UK artist albums in 2006 has shown that:
Independent releases accounted for two thirds (8 out of 12) of silver
albums (60,000+ sales) by UK artists in 2006 – an all time record.
Independent labels also produced a third (8 out of 24) of all UK artist
albums to achieve gold sales status (100,000+ sales) in 2006. As a
result the independent sector produced roughly half (16 out of 36) of all
UK artist albums to claim gold or silver status in 2006.
Overall, independent releases accounted for 28% (21 out of 76) of all
award worthy UK albums (silver, gold, platinum or multi-platinum) in
2006 – the best result for the independent sector in the six years AIM
has been measuring this data.
Despite dominance of the gold and silver album sales awards, with labels’
commercial acumen enabling the sector to punch well above its 1/5 UK
market share, supermarket stocking policies are resulting in independent
music being largely excluded from platinum and multi-platinum sales awards.
That said, strong multi-platinum showings by the following artists helped make
2006 a record year for UK independent labels:
Arctic Monkeys’ “Whatever They Say I Am…” (Domino) – The best-selling
independent album released in 2006 with triple platinum sales (900,000+
units). One of only four UK artist albums released in 2006 to do so well.
Kaiser Chiefs’ “Employment” (B-Unique) – one of only four albums by UK
artists to achieve an outstanding five times platinum status (1.5million+ total
sales) in 2006.
Katie Melua’s “Piece By Piece” (Dramatico) – one of only two albums by UK
artists to achieve quadruple platinum status (1.2million+ total sales) in 2006.
This upward sales trend for independent UK artists looks certain to continue
into 2007 with hotly-tipped new releases lined up from independent-signed
artists including Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs and Enter Shikari.
