Heute: Randy Newman
Im RS wird wieder mal Randy Newmans Song über das ELO aufgegriffen und dabei etwas einseitig als „höhnisch“ charakterisiert. Auch wenn bei Newman alles doppelten Boden hat, so muss man doch sagen, dass er kein Problem mit Lynne hat und zugegebn hat, ELO wirklich zu mögen:
„I love that ELO,“ Newman sang. Doesn’t quite have the ring of ‚I Love L.A.‘, but Lynne wasn’t offended, even though the tune seemed like a carefully-crafted slag. „I loved it,“ he says now. „Everybody always wants it to be that it’s taking a piss, but it wasn’t.“
How can he know for sure? Because Lynne produced Newman in 1988, on a track called ‚Falling In Love‘, for his Land of Dreams album. „We discussed it, and he said, ‚Oh, it was meant as a tribute.'“
„I liked their music and their style was so idiosyncratic that I wanted to do something in the style that they did,“ Newman admits. „The song is really about fans getting details of the groups they love wrong.“
Kurze ZF: Lynne hat darüber mit Newman gesprochen, als er 1988 Newman produzierte. Dabei sagte Newman, dass „The Story of a Rock ’n‘ Roll Band“ als Tribute gedacht war. Newman bestätigte, dass er ELOs Musik mochte. Der Stil sei so einzigartig, und er wollte versuchen, einen Song im ELO-Stil zu machen. Der Song ist eigentlich über Fans, die einige Fakten/Details bezüglich der Gruppe, die sie mögen, missverstehen.
