The “Modfather” Weller (or is that Son of the Modfather ? if you include Ray Davies ?) – anyhow – Weller has a new record out and it’s a bit of mulletted stinker really. Things start off with a couple of promising chords that end up sounding like a middle aged blokes version of Teenage Kicks, before the whole plot gets flabby in an over stuffed splash of big guitars and struggling energy levels. Even Wellers once spiteful, spitting vocal lines have given away to stuttering cabaret. It’s possible that Paul Weller sees himself as some sort of cruise ship entertainer, where “keeping it mellow (even when it’s loud)” keeps everyone happy. It’s a disappointly ordinary and a slightly muted record. So that’s Jayne McDonald for the Jam re-union then…
