Eric Allan Dolphy
* 20.06.1928 (Los Angeles)
† 29.06.1964 (Berlin)Eric Dolphy begann in jungen Jahren als Klarinettist, spielte von 1948 bis 1949 in der Roy Porter Big Band und in den Jahren 1950 bis 1952 in diversen Armee Bands.
Erst ab 1958 mit seinem Einstieg beim Chico Hamilton Quintet begann er musikalisch auf sich aufmerksam zu machen.
Seine wichtigste und intensivste Phase hatte er von 1960 bis zu seinem krankheitsbedingten Tod 1964.Unvollständige Diskographie:

Ich kenne von Abbey Lincoln nur ein einziges Lied, nämlich den Song „Afro Blue“ und ich finde ihn wunderschön. Soviel ich weiß, ist er auf dem Album „Abbey Lincoln is Blue“. Ist dieses Album empfehlenswert?--

atom: Was braucht man von den Sachen mit Hamilton?Für mich sind die Chico Hamilton Einspielungen fast nur von historischer Bedeutung. Ich empfinde sie alle nicht sonderlich bedeutsam.
Dolphys Spiel ist da noch sehr konventionell.
Ich muß aber dazu sagen, daß ich sie lange nicht gehört habe, da ich sie ebenfalls nicht besitze.--

I'm making jokes for single digits now.Auf seiner letzten Platte, „Expression“ spielte Coltrane übrigens das erste Mal auf jener Flöte, die ihm Dolphy vermacht hatte. Das Stück („To be“) ist eine einzige Erinnerung an den Freund.

„Iron Man“ in der Top Ten wundert mich ein wenig, da hätte ich doch eher ein Album der 64er Europatour von Mingus erwartet.Ich werde mir „Iron Man“ aber nochmal anhören, habe es immer etwas stiefmütterlich behandelt.

Da kenne ich bisher nur „The Great Concert of Charles Mingus“, und vertraue erstmal Hat and Beard, dass die „In Europe 1/2“ NOCH besser sind.
