Aus den Liner Notes der Charly-CD-Ausgabe von „The Late Great Townes Van Zandt“:
„The Title For 'The Late Great Townes Van Zandt' supposedly arose from an incident that occurred during the recording sessions. Georgia-based John W. English recalled: 'Townes used to play regularly at The Last Resort. On one visit to Athens, he talked to my arts journalism class about the „late great“ title. While recording the album, he almost died from an overdose of drugs and booze. Miraculously, he was saved by his long-time friend and fellow derelict, Jerry Jeff Walker, who just happened to find him in a comatose state. That close call may have scared Townes briefly, but it didn't reform him permanently'.“
Was natürlich nicht bedeutet, daß Wolfgang Doebeling nicht ebenfalls Recht hat. Das eine schließt das andere ja nicht aus.
