I found a record on eBay years ago, a British record by Howard Riley with Barry Guy called Discussions. This record was made in only 99 copies because of a tax thing in England and it’s a bit of a holy grail in UK free jazz history. This guy in Lithuania had a copy on eBay and I got in touch with him outside of eBay so that I could talk to him directly. And he said to put an extremely high bid in and then I would get it and then we could talk about how to do it. He knew who I was, and this is one great advantage of being a musician: some people maybe even like or at least know about you. So what we agreed was that I would come up and play a solo concert in Lithuania and the fee would be this record. So we made a deal, I went up there, played a solo concert and got the record and was very happy. Ich muss gerade schmunzeln. In obigen Link hatten wir ja gesehen, dass Mats schon ein ganz besonderes Bürschlein ist, was das Plattensuchen, -finden und -einsortieren angeht. Im Jazz-Podium 06/07 2025 ist ein fünfseitiger Artikel von John Corbett erschienen, mit Bildern, die wir zum Teil schon kennen (hier wie da von Ziga Koritnik). John erzählt, dass Mats jetzt einen neuen Spleen hat: er befreit alle LPs von ihren PVC-Schutzhüllen. „Das PVC zerstört sowohl die Hüllen als auch das Vinyl, wenn es mit Hitze oder direktem Sonnenlicht in Berührung kommt.“ Abgesehen von der Tatsache, dass solche Gefahren in Gustafssons Basement wohl nicht drohen (wie die Bilder zumindest nahelegen), habe ich mir gedacht: na hoffentlich schmeißt er nicht auch gleich alle LPs weg, die sind nämlich auch aus PVC …
