Hier jetzt auch noch „Bev Kelly in Person“ – die Stimme ist teils echt schwierig für mich: dieses krasse Highspeed-Flattervibrato in „My Foolish Heart“ geht irgendwie gar nicht für mich. Anderswo gefällt mir aber sehr, was es hier zu hören gibt, die Band ist tatsächlich super tight, die Story dazu in den Liner Notes (dass sie in der Coffee Gallery am besten war, dass sich das im Studio nicht hätte rekonstruieren lassen) passt schon.

She had been singing for some months in the thoroughly relaxed atmosphere of the Coffee Gallery, a high-ceilinged beer-wine-and-coffee spot located near San Francisco’s Broadway nightclub belt. It was a club whose owner had only recently rescued it from the beatnik trade by inaugurating a jazz policy. Working regularly with a quartet led by West Coast altoist Pony Poindexter, Bev felt she has established an unusually strong musical rapport with the group–and particularly with its pianist, Phillipines-born Flip Nunez, who (as is fully demonstrated here) turns out to be a remarkably sensitive accompanist. in addition, during her stint at the Gallery, Bev had built for herself a fervent and loyal following. It was her contention that the combined circumstances of the club, its audience, and these musicians had gotten her into something impossible to reproduce under formal recording-studi conditions, that she was at her best in this room, and why tnot try it? …
