Gut, dann höre ich doch noch Chavez‘ vierte Symphonie …

aus dem PDF (das bei späten Music&Arts/WHRA-Boxen leider das ordentliche Booklet abgelöst hat), Text von Nigel Simeone:

8 February 1960: Chávez and Mahler
Bernstein had known the music of Carlos Chávez since the 1940s – he included the Sinfonia India in his first (1945–6) season as conductor of the New York City Symphony and gave it several times subsequently, including a 1958 concert in Mexico City with the NYPO after which it received a thunderous ovation and Chávez and Bernstein embraced on stage. Chávez’s Fourth Symphony, which he called Sinfonia Romantica, was composed for the Louisville Orchestra and first performed in 1953, but the New York premiere was given on 4 February 1960 – this broadcast was of the performance on 8 February. Howard Taubman described the work in the New York Times as “tonal, melodic, agreeably worked out and scored.” As for the performance, he considered it “authoritative”, which seems an entirely fair assessment.

Es folgen auf der CD 11 aus der Box vier Mahler-Lieder mit Jeanie Tourel, und zum Abschluss vom 9. Oktober 1961 die achte Symphonie von Diamond, für mich auch ein völlig unbekannter Komponist, dessen Name mir soweit ich mich erinnern kann wie jener von Chávez auch nur im Zusammenhang mit Bernstein schon begegnet ist. Die Box hier geht bis 1941 zurück – Bernstein am Klavier, er spielt Prelude & Fugue No. 3 von Diamond. Auf den Orchesteraufnahmen, die ich gerade höre (Diamond schaffe ich wohl nicht mehr) dirigiert Bernstein die New York Philharmonic.
