Die erste halbe Stunde befasst sich auch anlässlich der Wiederveröffentlichung von The Jams 1982 als letzten Album erschienenen The Gift mit PW, Kollegen sowie weiteren mod acts (nicht unbedingt die Künstler, wohl aber die Tracks). Es geht um Songs von 1965 bis heute.

Nach diesen eher angenehm wirkenden Songs wird es verstörter:
Den zweiten Teil der Sendung widme ich einer Band der ich 2011 auf dem Roskilde- Festival fassungslos und begeistert zugehört und zugesehen habe. Für mich spielten die SWANS eines der intensivsten Konzerte die ich in den letzten Jahren besuchen durfte. Lasst euch überraschen oder macht Raucherpause.

Und ja, nicht zu viel erwarten, ist halt aggresive Werbung.

1. The Jam – Just Who Is The Five O’Clock Hero (Demo) NL Single 1982 / UK Album “The Gift” 1982

„Just Who Is the 5 O’Clock Hero?“ is a song and single released by The Jam on 3 July 1982. It features on their sixth studio album The Gift. Contrary to popular misconception, it was not released as a single in Britain but was a Dutch import. Despite this it still made number eight in the UK singles chart on 11 June 1982; The Jam performed a similar feat the previous year with „That’s Entertainment“. The single came with two B-sides – a version of „War“ and an original Weller song, „The Great Depression“.
The song
The song addresses those in 9 to 5 jobs as a nameless factory worker returns home to his wife wanting nothing but to sit and watch television before he has to go back to the ‚lunch box and the worker/management rows‘. The chorus focuses on the character having lived in the same street for years and highlights the futility of his life: ‚as one life finishes the other one starts‘- there has to be more to life than ’scrimping and saving and crossing off lists‘. According to interviews with Weller (and the booklet accompanying the Direction Reaction Creation box-set) the point was not to point fun at or criticize the character (such as Mr. Clean on All Mod Cons) but rather to highlight them as ‚real heroes of Britain‘. The song was conceived at the height of The Jam’s fame when Weller was very uncomfortable with being a ‚hero‘ himself.

2. The Yardbirds – You’re A Better Man Than I (US Album “Have A Rave Up With The Yardbirds 1965)

Having a Rave Up With The Yardbirds is the second American album by English rock band The Yardbirds. Released in 1965, the album is a mix of US-only tracks, previously released singles, and material from Five Live Yardbirds. The album spent thirty-three weeks in Billboard’s Top LPs chart where it reached number 53. Having a Rave Up „proved to be their most durable LP, remaining in print until 1972, longer than any other Yardbirds album on Epic“.[2] In 2003, the album was ranked number 353 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of „The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time“, which called the album „the bridge between beat groups and psychedelia“. [3]
The album features three songs that were recorded when the Yardbirds were on their first US tour in August–September 1965: „Train Kept A-Rollin'“, „You’re a Better Man than I“, and „I’m a Man“ (studio version with Jeff Beck). („Train Kept A-Rollin'“ and „I’m a Man“ were eventually released in the UK in 1976–1977[4] and in February 1966 „You’re a Better Man than I“ became the UK B-side of „Shapes of Things“ – see discography for singles information.) Also included are three previously released singles („Heart Full of Soul“, „Evil Hearted You“, „Still I’m Sad“). The second side of the album has four songs (with Eric Clapton, who left the band eight months earlier in March 1965 and is not pictured on the album cover) from the 1964 UK live album Five Live Yardbirds, including the influential „Smokestack Lightning“.
