Quincy Jones and His Orchestra – Live in Ludwigshafen 1961

Im Januar bei SWR/Jazzhaus erschienen – die 1960er Europa-Tour (mit dem gestrandeten Orchester, das spielen musste, um überhaupt wieder Heimkehren zu können) ist ja sehr gut dokumentiert, die vom Winter darauf weniger, es gibt offizielle Aufnahmen aus Zürich vom 10. März (EmArcy, später in der Mosaic-Box). Diese CD dokumentiert den Auftritt im Pfalzbau zu Ludwigshafen am 15. März.

Die CD gibt leider keine Besetzungliste, aber Jones stellt die Band vor („Thank you very much, my name is Werner Müller“) und das Line-Up ist nicht ganz identisch, wie es scheint.

Benny Bailey, Freddie Hubbard, Sixten Eriksson, Paul Cohen, Curtis Fuller, David Baker, Ake Persson, Julius Watkins, Phil Woods, Joe Lopez, Eric Dixon, Budd Johnson, Sahib Shihab, Patti Bown, Les Spann, Buddy Catlett, Stu Martin
als Gast dabei: Carlos „Patato“ Valdés

Die Besetzung in Zürich weicht, von Valdés abgesehen, in zwei Namen ab: Rolf Ericson statt Sixten Eriksson (macht Jones da einfach einen Fehler?) und Melba Liston statt David Baker. Seltsam, aber vielleicht sind ja auch die überlieferten Infos (Mosaic-Box, Bruyninckx-Diskographie) nicht korrekt?

Dieser Tage erscheinen die bisher unveröffentlichten MPS Aufnahmen von Bill Evans mit Eddie Gomez und Jack DeJohnette auf Resonance (DoLP und DoCD). gypsy hat vor kurzem zwar schon darauf hingewiesen, aber diese fünfeinhalbminütige Doku dazu wollte ich euch nicht vorenthalten:

Kann ich leider noch nicht wirklich sagen, die Gilberto ist super, ist aber ein Gilberto-Album mit guter Backing Band. Die Getz hab ich erst einmal oberflächlich gehört (die Gilberto zwei- oder dreimal). Also wenn Du Gilberto magst, ist die CD besimmt sehr empfehlenswert (obwohl ich von Gilberto neben den Aufnahmen mit Getz gar nicht mal so viel habe bisher, als dass ich da wirklich tief drin steckte und vergleichen könnte). Ich melde mich, wenn ich zur Getz-CD mehr zu sagen habe.

Aber Jones/Lewis ist ein Must, und Larry Young in Paris natürlich auch!

Die Peterson muss ich haben, das ist klar.

Und klar ist die Quincy Jones-Band super! Von der 1960er Tour gibt es diverse Mitschnitte, auf Qs eigenem Label und TCB wie auch bei den Piraten (die die TCB und Q-CDs auch gleich wieder verwurstet haben, aber zwei weitere CDs mit Material anbieten, das ich sonst nicht habe), und dann gibt es noch die zweite TCB, als Q sich die Bühne mit Nat „King“ Cole teilte, die ist auch tolll.

danke! bei mir ist das wohl eher umgekehrt, ich habe so ziemlich alles von gilberto und finde die sachen mit getz da eher charmante nebenwerke. ich hoffe, du hast zumindest das white album, ohne das ich persönlich nicht leben könnte? aber GETZ GILBERTO ’76 muss dann wohl auch sein – wobei die samples gerade klanglich ziemlich schlimm klingen…

This is one of the most important collections of Sal Mosca’s piano work. The 5 CD package from Cadence Jazz includes 56 tracks by the pianist performing on tour in the Netherlands in June 1981. The material features five solo concerts between June 19 and June 24 and gives us an opportunity to hear him at his finest.

Best of all, there’s little overlap of material as Mosca courageously challenged himself to move forward rather than repeat what he performed days earlier. It also features previously unreleased recordings offering a rare glimpse at Mosca’s piano approach in the early 1980s. The music was discovered after Mosca’s death in 2007, when bassist Don Messina, who played with him, was preparing a collection for the archives at Rutgers University’s Institute of Jazz Studies.

In a box labeled “1981 European Tour,” Don found seven tapes. About this recording Dick Hyman said When Sal Mosca performed this concert in The Hague, Netherlands, at last his playing was reaching a larger audience. This release adds brilliance to Mosca’s too small discography.
