Once again Thokei has unearthed a treasure-trove, 22 tracks by NZ indie legend Chris Knox ranging from pretty rare to very rare. Released seven years after Chris Knox’s life-altering stroke, this cassette is the next best thing to a new double album from the former frontman of NZ’s early and seminal punk icons The Enemy and Toy Love and one half of guitar duo Tall Dwarfs.

Knox has been active and immensely inspirational to many in various fields. Working as an experimental filmmaker, a cartoonist, music writer, critic, producer, and of course a prolific musician, he was one of the key figures of the budding indie music scene of the eighties and crucially involved in the rise of the legendary Flying Nun label. After the break-up of Toy Love in 1980, Knox continued to record and release music in his unique and distinctive style, solo and with his duo partner and former bandmate Alec Bathgate, and in the final years leading up to 2009 with new punk outfit The Nothing. Knox still performs occasionally today. For many years now, Chris Knox has been not only a living legend of the counterculture but also considered a national treasure or taonga and greatly respected by people from all sorts of cultural backgrounds.

KnoxTraxFine brings together compilation, limited cassette, b-side and other tracks including a wedding version of his 1989 hit Not Given Lightly or inspired cover versions of songs by Abba, The Great Unwashed, Alec Bathgate, The Fall – whose 1982 NZ tour Knox recorded for Flying Nun – and John Lennon and The Beatles, whom he admires greatly. This cassette is a must-have even for those who have a wide selection of Chris Knox and Tall Dwarfs records in their collections. Noisy and deeply moving, profound and witty, these 22 songs hold quite a few surprises, just as their multi-talented author has always been full of them.

Robert Scott- RePort (eine weitere „Sampler-Compilation“, inkl. 3 bisher unveröffentlichten Songs)

Robert Scott may well go down in history as the man who has written the most pop songs ever, in his property as a member of The Clean, of The Bats, or of The Magick Heads, as a solo artist or collaborating with various other artists. Gritty Post-Punk, bitter-sweet Folk, or dreamy Pop: the prolific songwriter, singer, guitarist and bass player is at home in quite different musical worlds. Nonetheless, his compositions are always as distinctive as his singing and they are all unmistakable Robert Scott songs that gel together, their varying temporal or contextual origins notwithstanding.

It isn’t easy to keep track of Robert Scott’s immense output. Not only has Scott released a great number of official albums, he has also contributed to various, hard to find compilations and is selling even more of his music on naturally rare CDRs at concerts or as downloads on Bandcamp.

RePort is a selection of 21 not-so-famous Robert Scott songs quite a few of which not many people may know. The tape features cover art by Robert Scott himself and content-wise some unexpected cover versions: The Magick Heads’ When I kissed the Teacher is originally by ABBA, Stop and Smell the Roses is by the TV Personalities, and Party of the Mind is a song by London Post-Punk legend The Sound. Stop and Smell the Roses, The Clue, and Tuis are hitherto unreleased tracks. Robert Scott, whose father emigrated from Scotland to NZ in the fifties, has also recorded two Robert Burns songs for Zelle Records’ Burns compilations, both of which, Green Grow the Rashes O and My Bonie Bell, are here. The latter is as yet unreleased.

Ende des Monats (hoffentlich) erhältlich:

One Man Bannister- Evolver (lim. 100 C-40 Tapes)

Das Album ist bereits 2013 als CD erschienen (Powertool Rec.), ich versuche aber trotzdem noch einmal mein Glück mit einem kleinen Cassetten-Release. One Man Bannister ist das Solo-Projekt Matthew Bannisters, der in den 80érn ein er der Köpfe der Sneaky Feelings war (Flying Nun Rec.). Eigentlich muß man wieder „ist“ schreiben, da die Band vor kurzer Zeit ein neues Album eingespielt hat (Sentimental Education Besetzung!) und wohl auch wieder ein paar Konzerte spielen, leider nur in NZ.

Matthews Lieblingsband sind die Beatles, sein Lieblingsalbum Revolver und Evolver sein Track-By-Track-Tribute, wobei es mehr Neuinterpretationen, als Coverversionen sind (zum Glück). Tape kann man (später) auf Bandcamp erwerben, oder aber hier (9 Euro inkl. Porto).

“Here Matthew Bannister (formerly of the Flying Nun band Sneaky Feelings and many other subsequent groups) under his most recent nom-de-disque One Man Bannister undertakes his own interpretations of this remarkable album.

It is quite a stretch for one person — Yellow Submarine to Eleanor Rigby, let alone Tomorrow Never Knows — and made more so when it is just done at home as a labour of love. But, against those formidable odds, this is not just very good indeed but it cuts dead some of those English or American outfits who have done similar things for a giveaway CD on a British magazine…Beatle/Bannister fan or not, you deserve to hear this.
